A forensic psychologist and body language expert has given his standpoint on the hospital photo released by Mitch McConnell, explaining why he believes one detail in particular has fueled widespread speculation online.
The image was released after McConnell spent around a month in hospital, with conspiracy theories quickly emerging over whether the photograph had been created using artificial intelligence.
After examining the image using multiple AI detection tools, Dr. G said he does not believe the photograph itself was completely fabricated.
"Based on all of the AIs that I ran this through, it does not appear to be AI generated."
He added: "It doesn't look like an AI generated image. That doesn't mean it wasn't manipulated, but it doesn't look like something that was fabricated out of absolutely nothing."
According to Dr. G, if the image had been entirely generated by AI, its composition would have been unusual.
"If it was, they really screwed up. This would be a crazy way to compose an entirely fake picture."
One of the biggest talking points online has been the newspaper McConnell is holding, which prominently displays the date.
While many assumed it had simply been included to prove the photo was recent, Dr. G believes there may be another explanation.
"Obviously, they want to show that it is from the day where the picture was taken. They want to show this is the day you can see the newspaper."
However, he argued McConnell's grip on the paper suggests he may have been struggling physically.
"I think that he's holding it the best that he can right now."
He also questioned the unusual way McConnell was holding it.
"Have you ever held a newspaper this way? Even if you're trying to pose for a picture and you're holding it in an unusual way... I really think that's as high as he can hold it. I think that's absolutely the best that he can do right now."
Dr. G said the overall image projects weakness rather than strength.
"Typically when politicians have been injured, when they've been sick, they want to show strength."
Instead, he noted: "He can't even stand in this picture. He's sitting in a hospital bed."
According to him, the image communicates: "Extreme frailty and weakness."
He also highlighted bruising visible on McConnell's left hand, though acknowledged this could be expected following a lengthy hospital stay.
Another detail that caught his attention was the absence of McConnell's wedding ring.
"Sometimes when you're in the hospital, they're concerned your hands are going to swell... so they might remove jewelry."
But he questioned why it was still missing if McConnell had already been discharged.
"The absence of that to me speaks to how frail he really is in this situation."
Dr. G also pointed to what he believed were awkward aspects of the pose between McConnell and his wife, Elaine Chao.
Although both appear to be looking upward, he argued they are not actually focusing on the same point.
"They're not looking at the same place."
He suggested this may have been the strongest image available rather than a naturally posed photograph.
"They went with the best picture they could."
Comparing it with previous public photographs of the couple, he added: "Typically they appear a lot closer."
Instead, he felt Chao appeared to be supporting her husband.
"It looks like she is trying to prop him up so it's as good a picture as possible."
Alongside the photograph, McConnell released a written update about his health.
In it, he said: "My doctors have confirmed that I didn't break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn't have a heart attack or a stroke. I didn't have any tumors or hemorrhages, but I was briefly unconscious."
He also revealed he had been treated for pneumonia.
"I've also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia."
McConnell explained that he had now moved into rehabilitation.
"I've been able to move from hospital care to a rehabilitation center where I'll keep regaining my strength."
He added: "As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time."
And confirmed he would remain away from the Senate.
"On the advice of my doctors, I won't be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet."
Dr. G also claimed AI detection software suggested the written statement may have been partially generated using artificial intelligence.
"The concepts were probably created by a person but the flow of it... was in fact AI generated."
He argued the omission of references to Lindsey Graham supported that theory.
"If Mitch McConnell was of sound mind and he was present and available to write his own statements, unequivocally, he would have mentioned Lindsey Graham's passing."
The expert also examined a brief section of emergency dispatch audio from the day McConnell was hospitalized.
According to the recording, emergency responders requested: "Medic 3 communications, can you find me a supervisor? CPR in progress."
Dr. G questioned whether that matched the official description of events.
"If you know anything about CPR, typically that's not done from a head injury."
He continued: "The assertion that he was briefly unconscious cannot be true unless 'briefly' means something very, very different to him than what it does to me."
While noting reports that cardiac arrest may also have been mentioned during dispatch, he said he had been unable to independently verify that claim.
Still, he concluded: "Being briefly unconscious and developing pneumonia does not seem consistent with the evidence that we have."
