Matt Gaetz claims that members of the Democratic party are "scared" of Donald Trump running for the position of House Speaker in the future.

According to Newsweek, the 39-year-old Florida Representative made these remarks on Twitter, after Pennsylvania Democratic Representative Brendan Boyle's introduction of the MEMBERS Act.

Taking to Twitter, Gaetz shared his thoughts by replying to an article shared by Fox News anchor Sean Hannity on the proposed bill, and wrote simply: "They're scared."

Doyle's act would stipulate that only elected members or delegates are eligible to serve as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, which would put the kibosh on any potential plans by the former President to run for this office.

Per the above publication, Doyle stated: "The Speaker of the U.S. House is second in the United States presidential line of succession."

He continued:

"That Donald Trump's name would even be tossed around as a potential speaker in the people's house, should serve as an alarm bell that our current requirements need to be amended in the name of protecting our nation and our democracy.

"As such, our laws should mandate that the Speaker be a member of the U.S. House."

Despite this, a number of Republican lawmakers and political pundits have suggested Trump be appointed Speaker by Republican lawmakers if they regain power in the 2022 midterm elections.

According to ABC News 27, Gaetz, himself vowed to nominate Trump to become the next Speaker during an address at a pro-Trump rally held in Sarasota, Florida, on July 3.

The lawmaker stated to the crowd: "After the next election cycle when we take back the House of Representatives, when we send Nancy Pelosi back to the filth of San Francisco, my commitment to you is that my vote for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives will go to Donald J. Trump."

Gatez himself has pledged to run for President in 2024 if Trump declines, stating in a text to The New York Post: "I support Donald Trump for president. I've directly encouraged him to run and he gives me every indication he will.

"If Trump doesn't run, I'm sure I could defeat whatever remains of Joe Biden by 2024."
