Obama appears to hit out at Trump with 'clear message' as Democrats score historic midterm elections victory
As the landslide Democratic victory began to flood in last night, former President Barack Obama congratulated his party on their midterm win and criticized Donald Trump.
In a lengthy tweet, Obama, who was in office from 2008 to 2017, said that the Democrats' win of both the House of Representatives and the Senate is a "clear message" that American citizens are not happy with the way their country is being run.
Obama congratulated his party and the current Congress
He penned: "Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face."
Winning by such a large number of votes in the midterm elections, the Democrats will soon hold a majority of seats in Congress. This means that the party will soon have far more power to influence laws, block the President's plans, and shape the country's political direction for the next two years.
The former President added: "These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots.
"They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first.
"We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy.
"While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future."
People flooded the comments agreeing with Obama
In the comments, people agreed resoundingly with Obama. One person described it as a "generational political massacre" and Americans are "done with MAGA."
Another added: "Tonight was the first time in two years I’ve felt any real happiness or hope. I’m proud and grateful to my fellow Americans."
However, although the Democrats will now have more say in how the country is run, Trump has made it clear he does not plan to cooperate with them while he is in office.
He has said that he is not afraid to use his veto power if he has to, sharing a picture of a red MAGA cap with the word "VETO" blasted across it to Truth Social shortly after it became clear his presidential powers were slipping away.
