White House issues warning after Trump's midterm election loss
The White House has issued a stark warning to Americans after Donald Trump’s administration faced a crushing defeat in the midterm elections.
Trump himself - while accepting the result - isn’t happy about how things went down, and has moved to shut down the celebrations across the chamber.
Trump administration issues a warning
Despite Trump’s Republicans losing the House and Senate, meaning that there will be a Democrat majority and the current government will essentially be a ‘lame duck’ government, those in charge in Washington DC wanted to remind everyone of exactly that fact.
“Trump is still your President,” the White House said.
This ‘PSA’ - public service announcment, for those unaware - was shared on X with the caption: “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
While Trump may still be the President, that doesn't mean that things are going to be easy.
Trump himself has admitted that he will have to work with the Democrats to get things done, but hasn't ruled out using his veto if he thinks that what they pass isn't up to it.
That might not make him very popular, but as the results suggest, he isn't very popular already and this is his only recourse.
When the Democrats enter the various seats of government next January, there will be all sorts of trouble.
Trump could be impeached, there's an outside change that a never-before-used rule could be triggered to get him out of the White House, or they might investigate him and his family.
As one senior Democrat put it - it's probably time for Trump and his family to 'lawyer up'.
What does it mean for the American population?
To start with, it's worth remembering that the midterm elections aren't the be-all-and-end-all of US politics.
Trump is right - he is still the president for another two years, barring any of the above things happening.
He's proven tough to impeach before, and triggering Amendment 25 is unlikely to say the least.
So, he'll likely sit there being - as he put it - 'Mr Veto' and stopping the Democrats doing what they want in government.
He still can do that.
There's also pretty much no chance that anyone is getting those $5,000 checks that he promised if the Republicans won.
They didn't, and to be quite honest nobody thought it was going to happen anyway.
Whatever the case, it won't be a boring time - it never is in US politics these days.
We'll just have to wait and see what Donald tries to do next, or what the Democrats try to do to him when they assume office early next year.
