New update on GoPro camera 'worn by 21-year-old woman who died bungee jumping'
Brazilian police have issued a chilling new update in the case of Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas' death, after she was thrown from a bridge.
Maria tragically passed away on Saturday (June 13) at the popular Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as "Skeleton Bridge," located in Limeira, São Paulo.
The woman from Jandira, Brazil, was killed after staff at the activity reportedly forgot to secure her safety rope before launching her from the 40-meter bridge.
She would post snaps showing her excitement at the activity, not knowing it would be the last thing she would ever do.
Distressing video footage from the incident reveals people shouting: "The rope, people, the rope!" just seconds after workers released Maria in a Superman position.
Unlike traditional bungee jumping, rope jumping uses a climbing-style rope to stop the fall, before swinging the individual in a pendulum-type fashion.
It has now been discovered that there might have been more footage of the accident.
Police say Maria was wearing a GoPro
Authorities believe that the victim was wearing a GoPro camera, which may have been hidden after the fatal plunge to her death.
Police are now searching for the missing GoPro, which they believe was attached to the 21-year-old's neck strap as she fell, according to Metro.
In the aftermath of the incident, it was revealed that workers at the company, Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, and Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, were arrested after they "forgot" to clip Maria’s harness on - they now face homicide charges.
Three more suspects have also been arrested, with one of the individuals suspected of removing the camera and deleting key evidence from it.
The trio includes a 29-year-old woman from Rio de Janeiro and two men aged 25 and 27 from Limeira and Indaiatuba.
Witness claims he saw someone remove the camera
Rafael Goulart, a witness to Maria's death, says he saw an employee removing the camera from Maria as she was suffering from the fall.
Speaking to news outlet EPTV, he said: "The first scene I remember when I saw the girl on the ground was seeing one of the employees removing the GoPro camera from the neck strap of the body that was already on the ground, either worried about the equipment or wanting to hide evidence."
Local authorities are officially investigating the possible "suppression of evidence... especially related to the disappearance of the image capture equipment used by the victim during the jump."
The camera is yet to be found, though harrowing footage of the fall has circulated online.
Workers say claim not to remember who carried out safety checks
Police footage reportedly shows that the three named men who were arrested struggled to explain the error during questioning.
Luis and Maicon said they were responsible for setting up the ropes before the jump, but neither could clearly explain who was responsible for which tasks.
Luis, who said he earned approximately $34 per jump, told investigators that responsibilities were not assigned to specific team members and that equipment checks were carried out together.
When asked who performed the final safety inspection before Maria's jump, he replied: "I can't remember," per The Sun.
According to reports, Maicon gave the same answer.
