An Australian food influencer who died in September last year after hemorrhaging following giving birth to her first child without a nurse or midwife present had refused medical help and even turned ambulances away.
A coroner’s inquest into Stacey Hatfield’s death revealed that wellness content creator was adamant about having no medical intervention before, during, or after the birth, and her husband, Nathan Warnecke, honored her wishes.
The 30-year-old expectant mother was eventually rushed to a hospital, where it was reported that over 20 medical professionals worked tirelessly to save her life, but it was too late, and she died of a severe postpartum hemorrhage shortly after arrival.
Her son Axel was delivered and survived the traumatic ordeal.
Nine months after Hatfield’s tragic death, the coroner’s inquest heard that the food influencer with almost 30,000 followers had chosen to give birth at home without the assistance of a midwife, nurse, or other medical professional.
Evidence presented to the court indicated that Hatfield declined medical assistance on two occasions during complications associated with the birth.
Reportedly, her husband respected her wishes to have a medically unaided birth and only decided to transport her to the hospital after her condition became severe.
The coroner’s inquest is currently ongoing, so it has not yet been determined if Hatfield’s death was avoidable.
Following his wife’s death, Wernecke shared a statement on Instagram announcing the loss and explaining the circumstances of her death.
He wrote in a statement on Instagram: “Stace passed on the 29th September 2025 after successfully giving birth to our firstborn son, Axel, at home.
“Tragically, shortly after, an unforeseen and extremely rare complication arose and she passed after being transferred to hospital.”
He also praised hospital staff, saying: “Hospital staff were amazing and did the utmost to help, but ultimately nothing could be done despite their best efforts.”
In another tribute, Wernecke reflected on Hatfield’s final moments with their son.
He said: “She held Axel when he was born, nursed him, saw that he was a boy and loved him.
“She loved him so much and still, continues to love him.”

Elise Caffee, a well-known Utah-based parenting and travel influencer, has tragically passed away after suffering catastrophic burns in a horrific car accident in Mexico.
The devastating news was shared by her family on March 12 through an Instagram account dedicated to updates on her condition.
“We are absolutely heartbroken to share the news of Elise’s passing tonight,” the post read. “She held on so long and fought so hard against an impossibly difficult set of circumstances.”
Elise and her husband, Dan Caffee, had traveled to Cancun, Mexico, on March 6 to attend a wedding when disaster struck, per PEOPLE.
On their way to the hotel, they were caught in a massive 10-car pileup on a freeway. According to a family statement, a truck carrying steaming hot asphalt collided with their vehicle, flipping it over and trapping Elise underneath the wreckage.
"A truck full of hot asphalt hit them, flipping their car, trapping Elise underneath, and dumping steaming hot asphalt on top of her as well as the people in front of the other cars," a family update on social media recounted.
The tragedy unfolded just outside a hospital, which responders described as a miracle. Medical workers rushed to the scene, desperately trying to help those trapped beneath the wreckage. However, the searing heat of the asphalt made rescue efforts even more difficult.
“Hospital workers rushed out and immediately started trying to help get people out from under cars … but were getting burned through their protective gloves because the asphalt was so hot,” a family post revealed.
Elise’s husband, Dan, later shared a heartbreaking update, writing: "Our driver was killed, and Elise was severely burned. I was uninjured."
After being pulled from the wreckage, Elise was rushed to a local hospital, where she was stabilized before being transported to a specialized burn unit in Utah. She remained in critical condition, undergoing multiple surgeries as doctors fought to save her life.
“She’s fighting for her life right now,” a family post read just days before her passing. “She continues to need your prayers.”
In one of their updates, Elise’s family described moments of hope, sharing that she was responsive at times despite her grave condition. “We’ve received hundreds of letters for her, and we can’t wait to start reading them to her,” they wrote.
Her daughters were also able to spend time with their mother in the hospital, bringing her small comforts. “The Caffee girls went in while Elise got her hair washed. Then the girls were able to take turns brushing it and braiding it,” a post shared. “Dan ended the night serenading Elise with his guitar.”
However, despite the medical team’s best efforts, Elise’s condition deteriorated.
The family later confirmed her passing, stating: “Absolutely everything that could have been done for her was done, and we are so grateful she was able to make it back home to say goodbye to her family before leaving us.”
They added: “We believe in eternal families and know we’ll see our beautiful mom, sister, wife, and daughter again.”
Caffee, a mother of three, was known for her adventurous spirit and passion for family travel. Through her Instagram account, 3KidsTravel, she documented her journeys across the world with her husband and children, inspiring thousands of followers with her belief that traveling with kids was not only possible but rewarding.
Her Instagram bio read: “Expert travel mom who believes you can take your kids everywhere!”
She often shared humorous insights into traveling as a family, including her motto: “Bribes work!”
Elise and Dan had committed to a life of travel early in their marriage, despite being told it would be difficult with children.
“When I had my first baby, people told me I’d have to stop traveling so much,” Elise wrote on her website. “But my husband and I decided we wouldn’t stop. When our oldest was four weeks old, we hopped on a plane to a beach. His next trip was an overnight camping trip in Yosemite, and then we took him to Mexico. Over time, we added two more girls to our family, and we kept traveling and adjusting to life as a family of five. Traveling became our way to connect and bond as a family.”
From Paris to Scotland to Maui, Elise shared her love for travel with her children, and her platform became a place of encouragement for parents looking to do the same.
Elise’s passing has left an outpouring of grief and support from her online community, friends, and family.
“We’re so grateful for all the prayers and love that have buoyed us up in the last few days and that we know will continue in the days ahead,” her family shared.
In the coming days, the Caffee family plans to share details about a service celebrating Elise’s life.
“Elise touched so many lives,” one follower commented. “Her adventurous spirit and love for her family inspired so many of us.”
In her honor, the family has also been promoting a GoFundMe to help support the family of the driver of the car, Luis. As of this writing, more than $71,000 has been raised.
Following the announcement of her passing, Elise's social media posts have been flooded with tributes from her fans and loved ones.
"I keep trying to find the words and I can’t, but know our thoughts and prayers are with you," one person wrote.
Another commented: "Rest in peace gone much too soon! Will keep your children, husband and family in our prayers."
"Just saw the news. Fly high on your next adventure!! Condolences to the beautiful family," commented a third.

Warning: This article contains discussions around pregnancy that some readers will find upsetting.
A grieving mother is calling for greater awareness of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) after her pregnant daughter took her own life while struggling with the debilitating condition.
The devastated mom has shared how she believes that if just one person had stepped in to help, her daughter could still be alive today.
“I wouldn’t want anybody to feel how Jess did,” said Susan Cronshaw, speaking to ITV News about her late daughter. “She felt like no one was listening — and they weren’t.”
Jess Cronshaw - 26, from the UK - had been diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a severe form of pregnancy sickness (often called severe morning sickness) that causes relentless nausea and vomiting, often leading to weight loss and dehydration.
The Cleveland Clinic notes that while the condition can sometimes be managed with medication, extreme cases require hospitalization and intravenous fluids.
Princess Catherine famously struggled with HG during her pregnancies, bringing some public awareness to the condition, but Jess’s mother believes her daughter’s suffering was not taken seriously.
“She couldn’t drink, she couldn’t eat, her weight was dropping off her. Her skin was white. She just wasn’t Jess,” mom Susan recalled.
In a heart-wrenching voice memo to a friend, Jess herself described the sheer toll of the illness: “Honestly, it’s, like, the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through in my life. The constant nausea, there’s no relief from it. I just spend my days in bed. It’s just horrible."
Despite her obvious distress, Susan says her daughter was given anti-nausea medication but later advised not to take it due to concerns for her baby’s health. The mom added that no healthcare professional really recognized how sick she was or gave the family a treatment plan.
In November 2022, when Jess was 28 weeks pregnant, she took her own life.
Her baby, daughter Elsie, was delivered via C-section but tragically passed away four days later.
“We had her christened,” Susan said. “She got reunited with her mom … there’s no words I can give you. Just heartbroke. Living my life now feels like I’m lost.”
An inquest into Jess’s death concluded that her mental health deteriorated due to feeling unheard and that she had been given “incorrect” advice to stop taking her anti-nausea medication.
The inquest also found that Jess had not been referred to any mental health service or support.
For Susan, this lack of intervention is the most painful part. “That’s all it would have [taken], one individual to do something for Jess, and it would have changed the outcome altogether,” she said. “I know that, and I live with that.”
In the wake of Jess’s death, a Just Giving fundraiser has been launched in her name to support Pregnancy Sickness Support, a UK charity helping women suffering from HG.
“We all miss you every day, Jess, and there isn’t a day that goes by where we don’t cherish the precious memories we had the honour of making with you,” the fundraiser page reads. “We hope we are doing you both proud by continuing to pursue much-needed change in the healthcare system … so no expectant mother suffering with HG experiences what Jess did. We love you both endlessly.”
As of this writing, more than £49,000 ($62,325) has been raised.
Let's hope Jess’s story ignites fresh conversations about the urgent need for better awareness, medical guidance, and mental health support for those suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum.
Our thoughts go out to her family and loved ones at this time.

Nursing influencer Hailey Okula, known as "Nurse Hailey" to her over 425,000 Instagram followers, tragically passed away on March 29 due to complications from childbirth.
Her husband, Matthew, shared the heartbreaking news on her Instagram page, expressing, "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I share the devastating news of the unexpected passing of my beautiful wife, Hailey Marie Okula, due to complications from childbirth."
Hailey and Matthew had endured years of infertility struggles before conceiving their son, Crew, through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Matthew reflected on their journey, stating, "Hailey's strength was unparalleled. Words can't describe how badly we wanted to be parents. After years of infertility struggles and a long, challenging IVF process, we were overjoyed to be expecting Crew."
Tragically, minutes after delivering Crew via cesarean section, Hailey suffered a cardiac arrest caused by an amniotic fluid embol), a rare and often fatal childbirth complication. Matthew explained to Fox 11 Los Angeles, "There’s no treatment. There's no way of diagnosing it."
According to the National Library of Medicine, an amniotic fluid embolism is a rare pregnancy complication caused by “amniotic fluid, fetal cells, hair, or other debris” entering the “maternal pulmonary circulation, causing cardiovascular collapse."
Hailey was celebrated for her dedication to the nursing community. In 2019, she founded RN New Grads, a program designed to support newly graduated nurses by offering educational resources and interview assistance.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), where Matthew serves as an engineer, expressed their condolences on Instagram, acknowledging the profound loss and the support extended to Matthew and Crew during this unimaginably difficult time.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Matthew and Crew, raising over $250,000 as of April 3. The fundraiser highlights Matthew's dedication to protecting others and emphasizes the community's commitment to supporting him in return.
The description for the fundraiser reads: "They faced every challenge together, determined to build the family they had dreamed of for so long. But in an instant, that dream was shattered.
"Now, Matt is left to navigate life as a single father while grieving the love of his life. The nursery they built together is no longer a shared refuge but a place of both love and heartache. The late-night feedings, diaper changes, and endless adjustments of new parenthood are his burden alone.
"Matt is not one to ask for help—but those who know him, especially his brothers and sisters in the fire service, know the kind of man he is. A man who has dedicated his life to protecting others. Now, it's our turn to protect him."
