GOP rep. Lauren Boebert has been slammed online after saying the Taliban is "Building Back Better" in the wake of their takeover of Afghanistan.
The Colorado congresswoman, 34, appeared to throw her support behind the extremist organization on social media as she joked about the country's fall to the Taliban.
"The Taliban are the only people building back better," she tweeted on Monday, August 16, in reference to President Joe Biden's own campaign slogan.
The tweet came as President Biden spoke about the crisis in Afghanistan in an address from the White House. He said that he stood "squarely behind" his decision to withdraw US troops from the country.
"After 20 years, I’ve learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw US forces," he said, per the Independent.
In any case, Boebert was immediately taken to task over the insensitivity of her tweet, with one Twitter user writing: "The Taliban murdered over 2,448 US military members and you just spit on their graves you sick, twisted, malignant, rotten woman.
"You think this is clever? A gotcha of the 'libs'? Our enemies aren’t a punchline for your tweets. We will never forget your traitorous bulls**t."
Another wrote: "Lauren, your statement certainly does not take into account of millions of Americans working every day to make this world a little better than the previous day.
"This includes the hard-working constituents in CO-03 who prevail despite your lack of any support. Who do you represent?"
A third wrote: "You get that the Taliban would remove you from your job, lock you in your house, and take away all your rights, right? Never mind, you're too ignorant to understand any of this. Carry on making a fool of yourself."
To make matters worse, the Republican later opted for another stab at humor in a caption accompanying a heartbreaking video showing hundreds of Afghans running after a US military plane - and some trying to hang on to the aircraft as it prepared for takeoff - in a desperate bid to flee the country.
A number of those hanging on to the plane tragically fell to their deaths, per Independent.
She wrote alongside the chilling footage: "At least they won’t have to read 'mean tweets'…"

Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert has defended her decision to heckle President Joe Biden during his State of the Union address on Tuesday, March 1.
The Republican lawmaker was booed and criticized by her fellow representatives for her remarks, which she made when the President was discussing battlefield conditions that increase veterans' risk of developing cancer.
As Biden said that such conditions "would put [veterans] in a flag-draped coffin", Boebert called out "13 of them" in reference to the 13 US service members killed in an Afghanistan attack last year.
Moments later, Biden went on to mention that his son Beau Biden - who served in Iraq - was affected by the cancerous conditions and died of a brain tumor in 2015.
Per NBC News, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand criticized Boebert's comment as "inappropriate".
"Her disruption was inappropriate, especially given the substance of the comments that the president was making at the time, which is to continue this way, which is to protect service members and our veterans," she said.
But Boebert has not been deterred by criticisms and defended her heckles proudly during an appearance on Fox News' 'The Ingraham Angle,' saying: "It is never wrong to stand up and speak out for moms and dads who lost their children."
"I want to remind everyone who may be concerned about me speaking up at the State of the Union that Joe Biden was 100% responsible for the deaths of the 13 brave service members we lost in Afghanistan. And last night, he took zero responsibility for it," she continued.
"When Joe Biden started talking about flag-draped coffins, I got fired up. My mind went straight to the 13 soldiers that died in Afghanistan," she went on.
"The mother of one of those heroes lives in my district. She told me Joe Biden killed her son. So you're darn right I spoke up. And if I could redo last night, I would absolutely do it again."
The controversial lawmaker finished by saying: "The left … got upset – they attacked me for it. That's fine. I can take it, but I will always speak the truth."

Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert could be heard interrupting President Joe Biden's State of the Union address on Tuesday night, NBC News reports.
Both women made several interjections throughout the speech, which earned them disapproving boos from fellow representatives.
Georgia Rep. Greene kicked off the heckling by grumbling throughout the Covid policy portion of Biden's speech. She then reportedly shouted out a remark about women's sports when the President mentioned new laws that target transgender citizens and their families.
When Biden moved on to talk about securing the border and immigration law, Greene was joined by Boebert, as both women tried to start a "build a wall" chant in reference to former President Donald Trump's infamous campaign slogan that called for a wall along the southern U.S. border.
But perhaps the most controversial moment came when Biden began discussing battlefield conditions that increase veterans' risk of developing cancer. As the President said that such conditions "would put [veterans] in a flag-draped coffin", Boebert called out "13 of them" - referring to the 13 US service members killed in an Afghanistan attack last year.
Boebert's remark proved particularly tasteless when - moments later - Biden mentioned that one such veteran was his son Beau Biden, who served in Iraq and died of brain cancer in 2015.
The Colorado Rep was booed by fellow lawmakers who later criticized her interruption as "inappropriate".
"Her disruption was inappropriate, especially given the substance of the comments that the president was making at the time, which is to continue this way, which is to protect service members and our veterans," Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said per NBC News.
"It's something that I think that there's a place. That's not the place to do that," agreed Sen. Mike Braun.
Both Boebert and Greene have cultivated controversial public images.
Last year, Boebert had to issue an apology after she suggested that fellow Rep. Ilhan Omar was mistaken for a terrorist in an elevator - an incident which he claimed was entirely made up.
Meanwhile, Greene recently faced criticism for appearing at the far-right America First Political Action Conference, where TNR reports founder and host Nick Fuentes asked audiences to applaud Russia's invasion of Ukraine and praised Adolf Hitler just moments before introducing her as a guest speaker. She has also been suspended from Twitter and faced widespread derision for supporting conspiracy theorists QAnon.

GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert has taken a cardboard cutout of Kamala Harris to the US/Mexico border in a brazen statement against the Vice President.
The 34-year-old Republican Congresswoman took to Twitter on Tuesday, June 8, to share how she had taken the cutout of the Vice President to the southern border.
Her stunt was performed to protest the lack of construction progress on former President Trump's wall and the VEEP's perceived disinterest in visiting the border.
In a post shared with her 135,000 followers on the platform, the Colorado representative tweeted:
"What’s up at the Southern Border? Not the WALL! Since the current regime doesn’t care, I’m going to keep fighting until we fix this border issue.
"Donate to my campaign today so I can keep the pressure on Cacklin’ Kamala & her puppet, Joe! [sic]"
The erection of the wall was one of Trump's key policies during his 2016 election campaign - but Republican's have been left frustrated by the thwarted pace during President Biden's administration
Related - Former Senator David Perdue "mocks" Kamala Harris' name:Boebert later shared a video showing herself emerging from her car with the cutout while Harris was in Mexico meeting with Mexican President Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Per The Daily Mail, Boebert states in the video: "More than 70 days ago, Biden named cackling Kamala as border czar but she hasn't done a single thing to protect the American people.
"You can't just hear about what's happening, you have to come down here to see for yourself to understand the devastating reality at our southern border."
She went on to discuss how the illegal movement of people has surged in recent months and ended a video with a plea to viewers to donate to her reelection campaign.
The Mail reports that the VP has faced renewed pressure on the subject of why she has not visited the border since assuming office, despite mounting criticism and invitations.
According to the Mail, the Vice President addressed the controversy in a press conference held in Mexico held on Tuesday, stating that she was more concerned by the recent humanitarian crisis in Guatemala.
Per The Mail, Harris stated: "Listen, I've been to the border before and I'll go again. But when I'm in Guatemala, dealing with root causes, I think we should have a conversation about what's going on in Guatemala."

US Representative Lauren Boebert has responded publicly after her 20-year-old son Tyler was cited for child abuse following an incident involving her infant grandson.
According to a July 11 court summons obtained by multiple outlets, Tyler Boebert received a misdemeanor citation for child abuse categorized as “criminal negligence” by the Windsor Police Department in Colorado.
Authorities confirmed "no death or injury" occurred in the incident, but further details about the circumstances have not been released, PEOPLE reports.
In a statement to PEOPLE and Newsweek, Boebert, 38, said the event "stems from a miscommunication on monitoring my young grandson that recently led to him getting out of our house.”
She added: “Tyler has been doing a great job getting his life on track as a father and citizen over the past year.”
The congresswoman emphasized that there was “absolutely no injury or physical abuse involved” and said the family had already met with Child Protective Services (CPS) to address the matter.
“I am confident this is a one-time incident that we have addressed as a family,” she said.
The child abuse citation is the latest in a series of legal troubles for Tyler, who became a father at 17. Earlier this year, he was arrested in connection to a spree of thefts and vehicle trespassing incidents in Rifle, Colorado, The Independent reports.
In February 2024, he faced more than 20 charges, including four felony counts of criminal possession of ID documents for multiple victims and one felony count of conspiracy to commit a felony.
Ultimately, Tyler pleaded guilty to one count of attempted identity theft in a plea deal that dismissed the remaining charges.
As part of the agreement, he received a two-year deferred judgment, 80 hours of community service, and a ban on using controlled substances. He is still serving that probationary sentence, and it remains unclear whether the recent child abuse citation could be considered a violation.
Tyler is due in Weld County Court on September 8.
This is not the first time Boebert has spoken out in defense of her son. Following his February arrest, she issued a statement expressing heartbreak over his struggles and the media scrutiny he’s faced.
“I love my son Tyler, who has been through some very difficult, public challenges for a young man and the subject of attention that he didn't ask for,” she said. “It breaks my heart to see my child struggling… I will never give up on him and I will continue to be there for him.”
She added: “As an adult and father, Tyler will take responsibility for his actions and should be held accountable for poor decisions just like any other citizen.”
Tyler's legal issues have unfolded amid a turbulent year for the Boebert family.
In January 2024, Tyler called police to report that his father, Jayson Boebert — Lauren’s ex-husband — had allegedly assaulted him by pushing him to the ground and pressing a thumb into his mouth. Jayson was later arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor assault and criminal mischief following a separate alleged altercation involving the congresswoman.
Lauren Boebert filed for divorce from Jayson in spring 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. The pair share four sons together: Tyler, Brody, Kaydon, and Roman.
Despite the ongoing legal and personal challenges, Boebert, who previously represented Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, successfully ran for office in the state’s more conservative 4th District in 2024. She remains a vocal figure within the Republican Party and a high-profile supporter of former President Donald Trump.
While the details of the July 11 incident remain under wraps, the citation and upcoming court date add another layer to Tyler Boebert’s ongoing legal narrative. Whether this latest case impacts his probation status will likely be addressed during his court appearance in September.
For now, the congresswoman insists the family has handled the situation internally and is focused on maintaining a safe and stable environment.
“Our family has already met with CPS to ensure we are continuing to provide a safe environment for my boys and my grandson,” Boebert said. “This is a one-time incident that we have addressed as a family.”

Donald Trump hit out at Joe Biden in a scathing verbal attack during a rally appearance on Saturday, slamming the President's recent Afghanistan withdrawal.
Speaking at a rally in Cullman, Alabama, the former president claimed that Biden had created "the greatest foreign policy humiliation in the history of the United States of America" following the USA's withdrawal from Afghanistan.
On August 15, the Taliban took political control of Afghanistan after entering the presidential palace in Kabul and declaring the war "over" - resulting in President Ashraf Ghani fleeing the country, CNBC reports.
As well as saying that Biden should "resign in disgrace", Trump said on Saturday that Biden has allowed "weakness in the White House".
Trump's full address can be seen below:Continuing to rip into Biden, Trump said that, "Vietnam looks like a Masterclass in strategy compared to Joe Biden’s catastrophe."
Per the New York Post, Trump added: "This will go down as one of the great military defeats of all time and it did not have to happen that way. This was not a withdrawal, this was a total surrender, for no reason."
Trump continued: "[Biden] surrendered our airbase, he surrendered our weapons, he surrendered our embassy."
The 75-year-old was speaking at the rally in support of Rep. Mo Brooks, who is running for a seat in Senate.
His blistering attack on Biden continued, as Trump took aim at the reported arms and equipment left in Afghanistan that has been "seized" by the Taliban.
"It didn’t have to happen. All [Biden] had to do was leave the soldiers until everyone was out, our citizens, the weapons, and then you bomb the hell out of the bases [...] and you say 'bye bye,'" Trump said.
He continued: "Very soon we’re going to have September 11 and we’re going to have — because of Biden — the Taliban flag flying over the embassy."
Trump then claimed that if he was in office, "the Taliban would not have ever dreamt of capturing our airfield or parading around with our American weapons."
Despite his critics, Biden has stood by his decision to withdraw from Afghanistan.
Earlier this week, Biden said from the White House that he had "learned the hard way that there was never a good way to withdraw our forces."
The President then spoke about Afghanistan's political leadership, saying: "American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves.
"We spent over a trillion dollars. We trained and equipped an Afghan military force of some 300,000 strong — incredibly well equipped — a force larger in size than the militaries of many of our NATO allies.
"We gave them every tool they could need. We paid their salaries, provided for the maintenance of their air force — something the Taliban doesn’t have. Taliban does not have an air force. We provided close air support.
"We gave them every chance to determine their own future. What we could not provide them was the will to fight for that future."
"I will not repeat the mistakes we've made in the past," he added.
