If you have been in a relationship for a
significant amount of time, you will know that you can have arguments about the most ridiculous of things. Regardless of how well your relationship is going on the whole, these disputes can come out of a range of
frustrations each of you has, as well as the general stress of your individual lives.
Worst of all is when these things get the better of you in public, like when annoyances bubble over on crowded public transport or you push their buttons with a misguided comment in a busy restaurant. On top of these smaller issues, there are some big ones that tend to come up too.
One of the most common topics that tend to cause some heated conversations is the subject of money and finances. You'd like to think that this isn't something that would get the better of most of us and that we would be able to not worry so much about the differences between wages or job satisfaction, but it does come up time and time again.
Yet you'd be surprised how
old-fashioned some are with their ideas of how much their partner should earn.
Kimber Dowsett, who goes by 'mzbat' on Twitter, recently overheard a public argument between a boyfriend and girlfriend on this very subject. Witnessing their heated debate in an airport, she couldn't resist live-tweeting the entire affair, which was sparked off by the girlfriend's recent promotion.
It turns out, this woefully out-dated guy was pretty upset with her promotion, mostly because she was going to earn more than him. On top of that, his 'embarrassment' over it all lead him to try and convince her to turn the job down entirely...
According to Kimber this is what went down:

Things somehow get worse when he starts talking about their future life as husband and wife, with his idea being that she would have to focus on her children more than any work life.

Then things take a turn and this guy found out the hard way that he can't say what he wants without consequences, or - worst of all - dictate how someone else should live their lives based on his own convenience and fragile ego.

She 'rage quits' from the conversation, hopefully moving on to better things, while he's left venting his anger in text form. Kimber then concluded her story by reaching out to the woman she had seen with the hope that she would change her life around.

On top of this, there were many other supporters in the replies to this tweet thread, pointing out how they are perfectly comfortable with their partners earning more than them.

I think it's fair to say that attitudes like this man had are relics of the past from which we should all be moving far away from.
