Chris Pratt's mother-in-law has sent the actor an uplifting message in the wake of the backlash he received after he praised his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger in an Instagram post.

Last week, the 42-year-old star Jurassic World star took to the social media platform to share a pre-birthday tribute to Katherine.

In one part of the post, he thanked the 31-year-old author for "giving" him a "gorgeous healthy daughter."

Some of his fans took issue with his wording, accusing Chris of undermining his ex-wife, fellow actor Anna Faris, considering their now-nine-year-old son was born prematurely and had to spend a number of weeks in the NICU before his parents could take him home.

At the time, a pediatric neurosurgeon told Anna and Chris that Jack had some severe brain bleeding and there was a chance that he could be developmentally disabled, the actress revealed in her memoir, Unqualified.

Now, Maria Shriver, Schwarzenegger's mother and Pratt's mother-in-law, has chimed in to defend the actor, hailing him as a "great" husband and father.

Taking to the comments of his post, Shriver wrote: "I want to remind you today what a good man you are what a great father you are to Jack and Lyla what a great husband you are to Katherine what a great son in law you are to me and what a great sense of humor you have!!"

She continued: "I love you Chris keep being your wonderful self rise above the noise your kids love your family loves you your wife loves you what a beautiful life I'm proud of you xo."

In Chris' original tribute to his wife, he wrote: "Guys. For real. Look how she’s looking at me! I mean. Find you somebody that looks at you like that!! You know!? We met in church. She’s given me an amazing life, a gorgeous healthy daughter, she chews so loudly that sometimes i put in my ear buds to drown it out, but that’s love!"

He continued: "She helps me with everything. In return, periodically, I open a jar of pickles. That’s the trade. Her heart is pure and it belongs to me. My greatest treasure right next to my Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck Rookie card.

"Which if you know, you know is saying a lot. It’s her birthday in about 6 weeks. So if I don’t get her anything, I’ll tell her to look back on this post. Love you honey."

After the backlash he received for the post, Chris took to his Instagram Stories to share that he was feeling "down".

Pratt said: "I went to bed really kind of upset and depressed and I woke up feeling crappy and I didn’t want to work out. I didn’t want to.

"I knew though if I put on my Christian music playlist and I got out in the woods and ran that I would feel better but I just didn’t want to. And I did it anyways and gosh was I right. It felt amazing."
