Doctor reveals exactly what happens to your body when you stop sexual intercourse as Khloe Kardashian reveals she hasn't had sex in years
An expert has chimed in with what really happens to your body if, like Khloé Kardashian, you choose to go four years without sex.
Sex is something that people can either live without or believe it is an act that’s important to partake in often.
Regardless of what you think, there are some things that happen to your body in response to going celibate – which is when a person stops having sex for reasons such as health, religious, and more.
The conversation about celibacy really ramped up when the 42-year-old made the admission in a teaser trailer for the latest season of The Kardashians show, where she claimed to have been single and sexless for four years, despite having received offers.
But she teased that this soon might be over when she hinted in the clip: “I’m single, I might be ready to mingle.”
Obviously, there are some misconceptions about steering away from sex, which is why Dr Shirin Lakhani, an expert in intimate and women’s health, has stepped up to clear the air about what really goes on in the body when you stop having sex.
First things first, she told Tyla that what you think you know about the physical implications of being celibate is false, as ‘the body should not undergo any particular changes simply because someone hasn't had sex for a certain amount of time’.
However, psychologically, there’s a difference.
According to the expert, your mood may change thanks to ‘a reduction in oxytocin and endorphins as well as a dip in dopamine levels’ when you stop having sex.
Alongside this, you could also become more stressed in response.
That’s because oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins are stress-buster hormones, and getting less of those means you’re not able to fight stress as much.
But it’s not just you who can change when sex is taken off the cards.
In other news, your pelvic floor gets to rest because orgasms no longer cause the pelvic-floor muscles to contract and relax (unless you’re flying solo).
The strength of the pelvic floor is important to keep organs such as the bladder, bowel, and uterus functioning well and able to hold in their contents.
Speaking of the uterus, if you stop orgasming, you might find that period cramps are stronger if you noticed orgasms helped to lessen the pain.
Your relationship might change.
Some couples feel differently about the importance of sex in a relationship.
Where one person may believe it brings a couple closer, another may not feel that way.
This is something that can impact a relationship, depending on your dynamic.
The doc also explained that if you’re post-menopausal, you already have lower oestrogen levels, so if adding less sex on the table, you may experience getting drier and having thinner skin down there at a quicker rate.
But what’s probably the most important fact to clear up is that you’re not going to get ‘tighter’.
“Sex, or a lack of sex, does not cause permanent changes to the size or shape of the vagina or labia,” Dr Lakhani said.
So, that’s what happens to you if you’re celibate.
If the Kardashian sister decides she’s had enough, there are plenty of people who have apparently made offers to help her break her vow.
“Chris Appleton, he literally gets stunned every time he hears that I am still not sexually active. It’s crazy. He talks about this like I have leprosy,” Khloe said on the Season 5 premiere.
When Appleton, 43, expressed his concern over her sex life to momager Kris Jenner, she apparently quipped back to him: “Why don’t you sleep with her then?”
Apparently, he said he’d do it.
“My friends, they are all like, ‘I will have sex with you,'” Khloe revealed. “That’s not what I am talking about.”
But she says she’s looking for more than a casual hookup.
