Dodgers star calls for Sydney Sweeney ‘soft p*rn' ad to be banned during MLB playoffs
A Los Angeles Dodgers player has called for adverts like Sydney Sweeney’s viral, controversial ad to be scrapped.
This came after the Novig collaboration brought to light a huge debate on ‘half-naked women’ in sports commercials.
Sweeney has recently faced a lot of backlash for her part in the betting company’s campaign, which saw the 29-year-old pose whilst scantily clad or entirely naked, but strategically covered by sporting equipment.
But Dodgers outfielder Alex Call has slammed the commercial in a post online during the MLB playoffs.
“Can we please get the soft p–n ads off playoff broadcasts, TBS, Fox, NBC, @MLB?”, he wrote. “My son wants to watch baseball with Dada, but how do I justify that when a half-naked [woman] could come on screen anytime??”
He added: “This is America’s Pastime. Parents shouldn’t have to worry about this.”
However, there were different reactions to his message.
While some were happy to see him comment on the issue, others didn’t understand the big deal.
“Thanks for spreading the message, Alex! It really is a shame,” wrote one X user.
“Amen. Those ads have no place on TV especially with young children watching,” commented another.
“That, and the gambling ads. It is disgusting the way sports leagues have always fought against gambling, and now they are totally in bed with it,” someone else shared.
“Thank you, finally some common sense from within the game. I’m a Red Sox fan but you got my follow,” commented one person.
A commenter wrote on the contrary that Call's priorities may be placed in the wrong margin as they wrote: "You should be more worried about your son getting offended over half naked women."
Another wrote: "Sexy commercials have been around since day 1. Only now do idiots have a problem with them. From people who claim to love women."
Someone else said: "Big fan of you, and the Dodgers. As a parent, I am responsible for creating a mindset and value system for my children, which will assist them in interpreting the world around them. I agree with your point to some degree, but shielding them and/or blaming somebody else isn’t the answer. Explaining life and leading them through this crazy world is the only thing you have control of, do it with passion. Go #dodgers."
As for Sweeney, she has spoken out about the controversy last month, too.
Wearing just a pair of white panties in a new advert for Novig, the Euphoria alum said: “There are grown men making spreadsheets to bet on what color underwear I’m wearing.”
“I mean, I’m flattered?” she added.
