Graham Norton reveals Taylor Swift’s one strict demand before appearing on his talk show
Graham Norton has shed light on a surprising behind-the-scenes detail regarding Taylor Swift's appearance on his popular BBC talk show last autumn.
The chart-topping singer, who recently tied the knot, made a late addition to the guest list last October while promoting her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.
When Swift joined the broadcast, viewers noticed that the famous red sofa looked exceptionally crowded. This cozy arrangement was not a coincidence, as Norton recently explained the logistics of her booking in an interview with GQ.
According to the host, the pop star was booked at the very last minute, presenting the production team with a difficult scheduling dilemma.
A strict rule for the couch
Because the episode was already fully booked, the show's producers initially assumed they would have to remove another guest to make room for the global superstar. "The show was fully booked. So we thought, 'We’re going to have to bump somebody'," Norton told the magazine.
However, Swift refused to let anyone lose their spot on the program. "Word came back from Taylor: no one must be bumped," Norton revealed. This decision meant that the sofa remained packed, but it ultimately led to an unexpected collaboration for everyone involved.
Because of the crowded lineup, every single guest on the couch that night ended up participating in Swift's music video for her song 'Opalite,' which was released the following February.
An unexpected music video cast
The star-studded sofa that night included Irish actor Cillian Murphy, Lewis Capaldi, Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, and Jodie Turner-Smith. During the recording, Gleeson made a joke about wanting to appear in one of her videos, which sparked an idea for Swift.
"I had this thought that it would be wild if all of our fellow guests on the Graham Norton show that night, including Graham himself, could be a part of it too," Swift later explained to her fans on Instagram. She described the host as "insanely charismatic and lovable."
The singer expressed immense gratitude for how the group came together to support the project, comparing the experience to a fun collective effort. "Like a school group project but for adults and it isn’t mandatory. To my delight, everyone from the show made the effort to time travel back to the 90s with us and help with this video," she shared.
Swift added that she "got ridiculously lucky with the group [she] was paired with, as they were "all people whose work [she’s] admired from afar."
