Before Twilight, before Batman, before anything, Robert Pattinson was a 21-year-old actor on the set of his second movie, fairly sure he had just destroyed his own career.
The film was Little Ashes. It came out in 2008, set in 1920s Madrid.
Pattinson played a young Salvador Dalí who arrives at university and falls into a relationship with the writer Federico García Lorca, and he was naked for a lot of it.
But the scene that nearly finished him off was one where his character had to reach orgasm on screen.
Pattinson looked at the script, thought about it, and decided the only way to make it convincing was to actually do it.
So he did.
He sat on the story for a few years before talking about it publicly.
When he did, in a 2013 interview with Germany's Interview magazine, his explanation was four words long.
"Faking it doesn't work."
He went further: "Try it. I can tell you right now, no chance. It just doesn't work.
"So I rubbed one out in front of the camera."
He also seemed to accept, with a kind of resigned humour, that the footage would follow him around forever.
"My orgasm face is recorded for eternity," he said.
Completely. He has said he basically quit acting in the days after shooting wrapped.
"I thought for a couple of days that this would be the end of my, at the time really short, acting career."
He was 21. It was his second proper role.
He had no way of knowing what was about to happen next.
Then someone rang him and told him he had landed the role in Twilight.
Twilight turned him into one of the most famous actors on the planet almost overnight.
Five films between 2008 and 2012, global stardom, and the kind of fame where people hand you their baby and ask you to bite it, which apparently happened at a premiere.
Before Twilight, Pattinson was living off what he earned from a supporting role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
After it, he could do whatever he wanted. He chose to go weird - Good Time, The Lighthouse, High Life, Christopher Nolan's Tenet, then The Batman.
He is 39 now, and nobody talks about Little Ashes as a potential career-ender.
They talk about it as the film where Robert Pattinson masturbated on camera and then got cast as a vampire three days later.
Little Ashes itself did alright, winning the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film, Limited Release in 2010.
IMDb gives it a 6.4. Rotten Tomatoes was harsher, putting it at 24 per cent.
Pattinson is one of several well-known British actors who have gone unsimulated on screen.
Kieran O'Brien and Margo Stilley had real sex throughout Michael Winterbottom's 2004 film 9 Songs, including oral sex and ejaculation.
O'Brien said afterwards that it 'wasn't difficult' and that he was 'really proud' of the film.
Stilley still defends it, though she has said she hates how the scenes have been ripped out of context and shared online.
Mark Rylance did an unsimulated oral sex scene with Kerry Fox in the 2001 film Intimacy.
He called it the hardest thing he has ever done as an actor. Uma Thurman has also spoken about appearing in a film with graphic and unsimulated content, warning the public before it came out.
Aubrey Plaza has also spoken about being asked to perform the real deal on set.
Pattinson's version is the one people remember, though.
Probably because he was 21, it was his second film, and the phone call that saved his career came almost immediately afterwards.
The gap between 'I've just ended everything' and 'You got the part' was a mere matter of days.
All because faking it doesn't work.

Robbert Pattinson has proven time and time again that he will go to great lengths to convey the character he is portraying.
However, on one occasion, he opted to throw acting out the window and perform an unsimulated sex act on camera... and the performance nearly cost him his career.
The 39-year-old actor rose to international stardom thanks to his roles in the 2000s in movies like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the Twilight Saga.
Following these roles - which earned him the hearts of teenage girls all over the globe - Pattinson soon became recognized as a critically acclaimed performer, thanks to his roles in more hard-hitting movies like Christopher Nolan's spy film Tenet (2020) or his portrayal of the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves' The Batman (2022).
But his esteemed career was nearly over before it started in 2008 when he accepted the role of legendary artist Salvador Dalí in the movie Little Ashes.
In one scene in the movie, Pattinson had to m*sturbate - but rather than simply act like he was, he revealed he actually "rubbed one out".
Speaking to Germany's Interview Magazine in 2013, he saidL "If you google something long enough you will soon know everything there is to know about me: what I eat, what my poop looks like, with whom I’m sleeping, what my d**k looks like, even what I look like when I m*sturbate.
"Well, that might be a little exaggerated. But my orgasm face is recorded for eternity."
He then explained that trying to act like he was orgasming just wasn't cutting it - so he opted to let Mrs. Palm and her five lovely sisters go to work: "Try it. I can tell you right now, no chance. It just doesn’t work.
"So I rubbed one out in front of the camera."
But in a subsequent interview with HuffPost, Pattinson revealed that the role almost led to him quitting acting entirely.
“I once decided to quit acting; it was when I did Little Ashes," he said. "I played Salvador Dali and had to do a lot of scenes where I was naked, and I also had to m*sturbate.” He continued to narrate the incident and added, “I mean really. My org*sm face is recorded for eternity.”
Once again stressing that faking it just wouldn't cut it on camera, Pattinson added: “So, I pleasured myself in front of the camera.”
And this isn't the first time Pattinson nearly lost his career.
In an interview with GQ, he revealed that he was nearly fired while working on Twilight.
"I was 21 and kind of wanted to make it as arty as possible. So I was kind of - we had this strange tension where the studio was kind of a little bit scared to make things a little bit too emo and stuff, and I thought that was the only way to play it," he revealed, adding that he was 21-years-old at the time and felt "infuriated" while on-set.
"The scene when Edward introduces Bella to his family the first time, I remember that being the day because my agent and my manager came up as a surprise visit," Pattinson continued. "And I was like, 'Oh, hey!' I just thought everything was fine. And then at lunch, they were like, 'Okay, so whatever you're doing right now, after lunch, just do the opposite, or you'll be fired by the end of the day.'
"And I was like, 'Okay!' And so, that was the only [way] they got me to sort of smile a bit."
Considering the Twilight Saga really kicked off Pattinson's career, it wouldn't have been surprising if his hypothetical firing ended his career there and then. Fortunately, it didn't.

Robert Pattinson once admitted that one of his most awkward movie scenes was completely real, and said the experience nearly pushed him out of acting altogether.
The Batman star opened up about filming intimate scenes for 2008 drama Little Ashes, where he portrayed surrealist painter Salvador Dali. While the film failed to impress critics and scored just 24 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Pattinson’s candid confession about what happened on set has continued to follow him years later.
Speaking in a profile for Interview Magazine Germany, Pattinson explained how filming explicit scenes became far more uncomfortable than expected, especially because he felt pretending simply was not believable on camera.
Pattinson revealed: "I once decided to quit acting; it was when I did ‘Little Ashes'.
"I played Salvador Dali and had to do a lot of scenes where I was naked, and I also had to masturbate. I mean really.
“My orgasm face is recorded for eternity."
When asked why he did not fake the moment instead, the actor gave an answer that shocked plenty of fans.
"He continued: "[It] just doesn’t work, so I pleasured myself in front of the camera."
At the time, Pattinson was still building his career before eventually becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest names through the Twilight franchise and later blockbuster roles including The Batman.
Pattinson is not the only actor to speak openly about real intimate scenes on screen.
Actress Margo Stilley previously discussed filming 2004 drama 9 Songs, directed by Michael Winterbottom, where every sex scene in the movie was real.
She told the Irish Examiner: "People were really angry with me.
“When I did press conferences people would shout abuse at me."
Stilley later defended the project and rejected criticism surrounding the film.
"People ask me if I felt that Michael Winterbottom took advantage of me because I hadn't acted before, but they forget that I developed the character.
"It was a film about love and sex. It wasn't porn. I mean, I had sex with my boyfriend last night and that wasn't porn. It was just hot sex!"
Unlike Stilley, Pattinson appeared far less enthusiastic about revisiting his experience filming Little Ashes.
Still, the actor clearly decided not to walk away from the industry after all. Since then, he has gone on to star in some of the biggest films of the last decade, transforming from Twilight heartthrob into one of Hollywood’s most recognisable leading men.
Stilley, meanwhile, remained proud of her role in 9 Songs and said: "9 Songs was a real film about love and sex, and I wanted to do that film and I am proud of it".

When you’re watching your favorite British actor lighting up the screen, you probably assume all the steamy scenes are carefully choreographed with body doubles and camera tricks. But in some cases, those sex scenes are 100 percent real - no faking, no stand-ins.
From controversial indie films to lesser-known biopics, a few UK celebs have gone all-in for authenticity. Whether it was their own choice or a director’s call, these stars actually had unsimulated sex on camera, and some of them have mixed feelings about it now.
Letterboxd once put together a list of films featuring real sex acts, and a few big names from the UK made the cut.
The 2004 film 9 Songs is often described as one of the most sexually explicit films in modern cinema. It follows a passionate relationship between a young couple from their first meeting at Brixton Academy through to their breakup. And when it comes to sex scenes, this one doesn’t hold back.
Kieran O’Brien engages in multiple unsimulated sex scenes with Margo Stilley, including oral sex and ejaculation. O’Brien said it "wasn’t difficult" for him to do and, despite the film’s controversy, he was "really proud" of it. Stilley still defends the film 20 years later.
"It's a shame that it's been torn apart into these little pieces and bastardised online, to be honest," she told LADbible.
Before he became known for playing a sparkly vampire and later a brooding Batman, Robert Pattinson took on the role of Salvador Dali in the 2008 film Little Ashes. And in one unforgettable scene, he masturbated for real on camera.
Pattinson explained that he didn’t believe faking the act would be convincing enough. Speaking to Interview magazine in Germany, he said: "My orgasm face is recorded for eternity."
In the 2001 film Intimacy, Mark Rylance starred alongside Kerry Fox in a raw portrayal of a casual relationship between two strangers in London. The movie includes an unsimulated oral sex act, and Rylance later admitted it was one of the hardest roles he ever took.
"I was convinced it was a vital story about the difficulties people face finding intimacy in a big city like London," he told The Guardian. "Hanif Kureishi's writing couldn't have been more intimate and revealing, but I found the making of the film and the subsequent publicity and personal attacks very, very painful. I wish I hadn't made it."

When you're watching one of your favorite flicks and a steamy scene comes up, the truth is that it's almost always fake - like movies usually are.
But on the rare occasion where it's not, actors may have to carry out the acts on screen for real, meaning that you may actually be watching the deed unfold.
While many actors open up on how awkward fake sex scenes can be, a select few have spoken out about the realities of filming a real one.
Normal films will employ intimacy coordinators, get make-up crews to construct modesty garments and more to make the scene believable, but other times, directors or actors may want the act to be real.
The idea of unsimulated sex scenes has sparked debate over the years, but some big names in the industry have tried their hand at it for one reason or another.
So here are six well-known celebrities who have ventured beyond the unknown and stripped for the cameras.
Pattinson may best be known for his roles in The Batman or Twilight, but the British actor gave an unsimulated sex scene a go in a 2008 film, the same year the latter came out.
It was called Little Ashes, and in it, Pattinson played surrealist painter Salvador Dali.
While speaking to Germany's Interview Magazine, he revealed that he had to self-pleasure on camera, admitting: "I played Salvador Dali and had to do a lot of scenes where I was naked, and I also had to masturbate. I mean really.
“My orgasm face is recorded for eternity."
He admitted that he couldn't fake it as "[it] just doesn't work," so he did what he needed to do.
Parks and Recreation actor Aubrey Plaza said that she had a similar scene in the 2013 film The To-Do List.
In the scene, her character Brandy Klark has a moment of self-pleasure, and Plaza admitted to Conan O'Brien on his talk show that she was confused after seeing the direction in the script.
Apparently, the script said "Brandy masturbates," and Plaza recalled: "In my head I envisioned a nice scene where you just see my hand slowly go out of frame.
"I thought I was doing one thing and when I showed up it was a whole different thing, it was a full body shot and I asked the director 'what should I do' and she said 'masturbate like it says in the script'."
While Dafoe and Gainsbourg didn't have sex themselves, their body doubles got it on in the 2009 movie Antichrist.
There's a graphic scene in the movie which leads to the pair's characters having sex, and the act seen on screen is real.
Dafoe explained why they didn't do it themselves at the time, saying: "Charlotte and I are both married and I’m not sure everybody would be cool with that."
Sevigny and Gallo starred opposite one another in 2003 film The Brown Bunny, another title to feature a real sex scene.
As part of it, Sevigny's character performed oral sex on Gallo, as Sevigny admitted that what happened was "very complicated."
Speaking to Playboy in 2010, she said: "There are a lot of emotions. I'll probably have to go to therapy at some point. But I love Vincent. The film is tragic and beautiful, and I'm proud of it and my performance.
"I'm sad that people think one way of the movie, but what can you do? I've done many explicit sex scenes, but I'm not that interested in doing any more.
"I'm more self-aware now and wouldn't be able to be as free, so why even do it?"
The pair got steamy while filming Intimacy, due to an unsimulated oral sex act that was carried out.
In fact Rylance said upon reflection, the movie was the "most difficult job" he'd ever taken, due to this scene.
Speaking to The Guardian in 2016, he admitted: "I was convinced it was a vital story about the difficulties people face finding intimacy in a big city like London.
"Hanif Kureishi's writing couldn't have been more intimate and revealing, but I found the making of the film and the subsequent publicity and personal attacks very, very painful. I wish I hadn't made it."
His regret came from the "undue pressure" he felt from director Patrice Chéreau to do the scene, admitting that he didn't have the confidence at the time to say no.
On the other hand, Fox didn't regret making the film.
Nymphomaniac featured a number of A-listers, such as Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, and Shia LaBeouf among others.
Louise Vesth, a producer of the film, told The Hollywood Reporter that while there was an odd unsimulated sex scene, body doubles carried the acts out.
This was then digitally edited over the actors, who didn't do the acts on camera.
"We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post (production) we will digital-impose the two," she explained.
The producer stated: "So above the waist it will be the star and then below the waist it will be the doubles."
Whatever works, and all that.
