Ryan Reynolds has revealed he suffered horrific injuries after being hit by a drunk driver when he was just 18 years old, leaving him hospitalzed for weeks.
The Deadpool star says the crash left him with devastating damage to one side of his body, in an incident he has described as life-changing.
The actor was treated in hospital in Vancouver, Canada, where he remained for around four weeks as doctors worked to repair multiple fractures.
Reynolds recalled the incident while speaking to his Welcome to Wrexham co-star Rob Mac in a video for GQ.
He said the crash happened after he left a bar at the age of 18, having made the decision not to drive after drinking.
"When I was 18, I left a bar and I'd had a beer," he said.
"I walked back and I looked at my car for a second. I thought, 'You know what, I'm not going to drive anywhere. Even if it's four blocks home, absolutely not.'
"Instead, I turned around, started to cross the street and I was run over by a drunk driver," he said.
Reynolds added that the moment left him in shock, recalling a sudden “why God?!” reaction after the collision.
The actor revealed the severity of his injuries, saying the impact was far worse than he initially realised.
"[I] broke every bone in my left side," Reynolds said.
He explained that the force of the crash was so intense it left the driver’s vehicle completely unusable. Despite the seriousness of the incident, Reynolds has often referenced it with his trademark humor.
He joked about his recovery and hospital care, thanking medical staff who helped treat his injuries.
"I'd like to thank Dr. Meek at the General Hospital for putting me back together so kindly," he said.
"Socialized medicine, he couldn't say no."
Reynolds has previously spoken about the aftermath of the crash, including waking up days later in hospital.
He told CTV News in 2011 that he regained consciousness three days after the accident and spent a prolonged period recovering from his injuries.
The actor has since described himself as “a rickety, broken mess” in the years following the incident.
Looking back, the crash remains one of the most serious moments of his early life, long before he became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Today, Reynolds continues to reference the experience in interviews, reflecting on how quickly his life could have taken a very different turn.

Social media users are stunned after a TikTok star recounted a series of unfortunate events that included a broken jaw, a brain tumor, and a car crash.
Australian actress Alli McLaren - who goes by the handle @notallialicee - posted a video about the nightmarish event she experienced on the social media platform.
"I’m that friend that lives that ‘can’t catch a break dramatic lifestyle," the 30-year-old content creator sarcastically said in her viral TikTok post.
Alli's suffering first started when she was "randomly walking" in downtown Los Angeles one day and then a homeless person came and punched her in the face.
Watch Alli's TikTok below:"I had to get jaw surgery to fix it and my immune system was super weak, I ended up getting infection and pneumonia," she continued.
But during her battle with pneumonia, she fell and banged her head, which triggered a traumatic brain injury so she had to get brain surgery to "get the tumor out".
However, the misery didn't stop there as the aspiring actress had "start radiation" shortly after her brain surgery because the doctors were unable to get all the noncancerous tumors out.
Allie then revealed that when she was on her way to her hospital treatment for her tumor, she "got ran over by a car" that failed to brake at a stop sign. According to the New York Post, the incident left her with two broken feet.
Upon seeing her video - which has amassed 1.6 million views and 267.7K likes on the social media platform - many people shared their reactions to her painful predicaments.
One user wrote: "To whoever has your voodoo doll, it’s enough."
Another person said: "So life basically froze your lemons and then threw them at ya."
A third chimed in and commented: "The way my jaw dropped slowly."
And, a fourth person praised: "The way I’d never get out of bed again. You are STRONG as hell."
Meanwhile, one bold person wrote: "Okay but the homeless guy kinda saved your life??" But Alli responded by sharing a video explaining why she doesn't feel thankful toward her attacker.
"I was punched, I got an x-ray and nothing was on it. Cool, I fell over and hit my head, and nothing was on it (the x-ray)," she said, explaining that when she started getting seizures that's what the tumor turned up in her scan.
"So maybe, he (the homeless person) helped me find it or maybe he helped cause it?" she questioned.
According to The Post, Alli has remained optimistic about the future and said: "I think I stay strong by knowing it can’t be like this forever and also knowing that one day I’m going to wake up and I won’t be in pain anymore."
"I do believe that everything happens for a reason," she added.

After Kevin Hart released a video explaining why he was in a wheelchair, the former NFL star who was there during the incident shared a clip of how it happened.
In case you missed it, the 44-year-old funnyman endured some rather unpleasant injuries while attempting feats that once came naturally during his youth.
In his social media address, Hart told his followers: "Ladies and gentlemen, the age 40 is real. To all my men and women out there who are 40 years old and above, it's not a game.
"Respect that age, respect that age, or that age will make you respect it. I was just forced to respect it."
He added: "This is a public service announcement because I know people may see me out and I don't want you to be alarmed, but I'm in a wheelchair."
The incident unfurled when Hart, accompanied by former NFL star Stevan Ridley, engaged in an impromptu competition. A friendly dispute led the duo to decide upon a race, with Hart's confidence in his speed steering him to accept the challenge.
We can now see the race take place after Ridley uploaded the footage to his Instagram page, where he kindly shared three videos, one of which is a slow-motion shot of the moment Hart experienced the injury.
Despite some of the comments stating that it looks like Hart is running slow, it should be noted that he's alongside a former athlete and the actor is definitely running at full pelt.
Also, the fact that they had multiple races proves how competitive they both were.
Following the friendly competition, and from the comfort of his own home, Hart admitted: "Guys, I blew all of my s***. Tore my lower abdomen, my adductors, I tore them. I don't even know what that is, but I tore them. Tore those two. I can't walk, sit my a** down. This is 44.
"What are we competing for at this age, what am I doing? Why did I even race? Stupidest s***, and now I can't walk 'cause I'm somewhere trying to get the title of the fastest at the barbecue," he went on.
He wasn't alone in his pain, as some of his celebrity pals empathized with the star and left messages of encouragement.
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson recounted his own brush with an adductor muscle tear during his wrestling days, assuring Hart that he would bounce back, all while still managing to take a jab at his friend/rival, speculating that Hart might "grow a 3rd ball" in the process.
Will Smith extended his empathy towards Hart's predicament, acknowledging the inevitability of aging. Meanwhile, Judd Apatow playfully speculated that Hart's choice of attire, a Gucci x Adidas collaboration, might have inadvertently hindered his performance: "Maybe the Gucci Adidas collab slowed you down."
We hope Hart is doing well - hopefully, he'll refrain from racing against athletes in the future.

The 52-year-old actor - who is best known for his roles as Marvel superhero Hawkeye - was rushed to hospital on New Year's Day while attempting to stop his seven-ton snow plow from hitting his nephew, while the pair cleared the roads around his home in Nevada.

A few weeks following the accident, Renner took to his Instagram account to update his fans and followers on his condition. "Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. "I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I …. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30 plus broken bones will mend , grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all," Renner's caption concluded.
Renner has continued to make a miraculous recovery from his near-death incident, being papped by TMZ heading into Jimmy Kimmel's studio with the assistance of a cane.
The outlet also reported that the actor took his family to Six Flags on Good Friday (April 7), where he was spotted using a motorized scooter to get around the amusement park. The father-of-one has previously opened up about using an anti-gravity treadmill to strengthen his legs and get his muscles working normally again.
On Thursday (April 6), Renner's interview with Diane Sawyer was released, where he recounted the lead up to his traumatic accident. Several teaser clips were released in the weeks before the interview's release, where Renner told Sawyer he would do it all again to save his nephew, who would have been crushed by the snowplow if Renner had not jumped in front of him.
"I would do it again. It was coming right at my nephew. I would do it again," he said.

Renner also took to Instagram recently to thank the staff at Renown Regional Medical Center for helping him recover from the near-fatal incident. The star also spent his 52nd birthday in the ICU on January 7.
The Marvel actor's family also thanked staff in a statement via TMZ: "Jeremy's family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families."
We wish Renner all the best on his road to recovery.
