Your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman is now sporting a new hairdo, and his fans aren't best impressed.

To the shock of internet users everywhere, 23-year-old Tom Holland has shaved nearly all of his famously flowing locks, leaving floppy hair lovers in the lurch. Judging by the reaction, Marvel fans haven’t been this bereft since (spoilers) Tony Stark died.

According to a report by Buzzfeed News, the news first broke when Holland posted a video to a fan called Sabrina. Although the actor was supposed to be sharing the surprising revelation that he was spending the day hanging out with Sabrina’s dad, audiences were understandably distracted by his new hair, or lack thereof.

The sweet message was somewhat lost in the furore that followed.

Luckily, there is apparently some method behind the hirsute madness. According to Buzzfeed, Holland is about to begin shooting on a new project from the Russo brothers - directors of Avengers: Endgame - dubbed Cherry.

Also starring Bill Skarsgård and Jack Reynor, the film allegedly revolves around an ex-soldier, which may help to explain the new look.

According to the Cherry IMDb page, the film's description reads: "An Army medic suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder becomes a serial bank robber after an addiction to drugs puts him in debt." This information may help shed some light on Holland’s exposed scalp.

Despite what looks like a perfectly rational explanation for the style, Twitter has been predictably mean-spirited. More than one user has likened the actor to rapper Eminem, while another added, “...now he looks like caillou,” the bald star of the eponymous children’s TV series. Who knew that Spiderman’s hair mattered so much to so many.
