Access is generally limited to couples, though single guests may enter if they are invited by a couple.

Depending on the ship, the room can be located in different parts of the vessel, but it is usually placed in one of the larger spaces due to its popularity.

The area is advertised as a “friendly space for those looking to experiment with their sexuality in a space where freedom reigns," per The Sun.

What actually happens inside the red room

According to Shelor, the setup alone is enough to make the room stand out.

“They bring all their own people, and they will choose a large space on the cruise ship for this, and they bring in brand new mattresses,” she told LADbible. “You'll see them loaded onto the ship as you're boarding. As well as tonnes of clean sheets.”

She explained that the room is transformed every night before guests arrive. “They will make this room up every night with tonnes of mattresses on the floor, plastic covers, and then sheets on top. There's towels and water. It looks sexy with sexy lighting.”

Guests can use the mattresses to spend time with their partner - or someone else - depending on what they are comfortable with.

However, participation is entirely optional as some people can choose to watch, socialize, or relax while enjoying a drink.

A different perspective from cruise guests

Social media creators Bella and Jase, a married couple who openly share insights into the swinging lifestyle with their followers through their YouTube channel, 4OURPLAY, recently offered viewers a rare look inside a similar space on one of the cruises, known as the “playroom".

In an April YouTube video, they were given access to the room before it opened for the night.

Bella explained that it contains roughly 40 beds lined with curtains that can be drawn for privacy. Each area includes towels, water, and protection for guests.

The couple also found a BDSM-themed section of the room equipped with restraints, padded furniture, and other accessories designed for guests who want to “take things to the next level".

One unexpected feature even caught the pair off-guard - two bowling lanes inside the playroom itself.

Rules and safety on board

Despite the room’s provocative reputation, the couple stressed that the environment is carefully monitored.

Attendants and security staff patrol the area regularly to ensure all interactions remain safe and consensual. “No drinks are allowed inside the playroom,” Jase explained.

Guests must leave drinks at a designated table outside the room where staff members keep watch over belongings.

Kate described the guests as ranging from their mid-twenties to mid-fifties, adding: “I would say there's people that are there to swing for sure, then there are couples who don't interact with other couples. They don't play, they don't swing, but they may want to do something a little wild.

“There’s a lot of people who may just want to push some personal boundaries and feel a little bit, you know, dangerous and exciting. And then there's also areas where you can be completely nude, but that is in the indoor pool area only and the rules are very strict.”

But what really happens in the “red room”?

According to Kate, “the Playroom is an exclusive area for couples only,” and it’s where some of the wildest experiences occur.

Cameras and photos are banned, and staff are stationed at the doors to protect the privacy of those inside.

Inside, couples can either observe while sipping a drink or join in on the action on circular beds with protective covers. Kate runs her “hypnotic sex seminar” in this space, guiding up to 60 couples toward a shared climax.

Once you look past seasickness and being isolated in the middle of the ocean temporarily, a cruise ship is just a big, five-star party with everything you could ever need onboard.

While spicy cruises have also become a getaway option in recent times, a regular cruise also has its fair share of steamy moments and unspoken rules when it comes to hooking up.

That is, if you believe what some of the workers on board say.

Sex on board can get "weird"

Lucy has worked in the cruise ship industry for a decade, so it's fair to say that she may know a thing or two about what it's like onboard.

She claims to know how to "maximize the enjoyment of a cruise vacation," and this can include being ready for any given scenario.

One of these is the potential to meet someone, as she explained in a 2022 video: "I think it's kind of well known that a lot of stuff goes on on cruise ships and it's all kind of incestuous in a weird way," as she compared it to a "small town."

"There's only a certain amount of people, so friends end up hooking up with friends, who then end up going with the other friend, and that's cruise ships ultimately," she admitted.

Aside from the inevitable crossovers that you may get as a single person on a cruise ship, it turns out that there is something that many passengers and workers worry about in particular.

Possibilities of catching an STI

Lucy explained that one of her friends was worried about catching an STI, but she explained how it all works.

"When you have your medical done to work on a cruise ship, I would say 80 percent of medicals test you for sexually transmitted infections and diseases, so actually, in that sense it's quite safe because the majority of people who work on a cruise ship have been tested for something, and if they have something then they will know about it," she added.

She then answered her friend's worries by explaining: "So I'm gonna say no in that sense, you don't need to come on here and be worried about catching something, it's like anything, you just use contraception to protect yourself."

But after years on cruise ships, she warned any potential lovers: "Just give it some time because having worked on ships for many years, I have seen some situations arise that you just wouldn't believe."

She advised people to abstain for their first two weeks onboard, because it's important to figure out what the dynamics are like with certain people.

New girls usually get messaged

Lucy said that "especially if you're a girl," you will get messages from those onboard when you are new and joining the crew.

"You will have people message you because you're fresh meat, so you'll get a lot of attention and if you've never experienced that before," she admitted.

While she found it flattering at first, Lucy then revealed: "It happens to everyone, and the people trying with you are also trying with every new girl that comes on board most likely," as she further reiterated to "understand the dynamics" first.
