A teacher accused of inappropriate relationships with her two adopted sons was allegedly reported to authorities by her ex-husband after he found a series of alarming text messages.
Amber Swain, 35, was charged earlier this month after allegations involving the two teens, aged 17 and 18, came to light.
The former executive director of a nonprofit that supports foster children is also a teacher at Pend Oreille River School. Following her arrest, the Newport School District placed her on administrative leave.
In a statement, the district said it is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
"While we cannot say much at this time, we can unequivocally and firmly state that we take these matters very seriously," the district said. "We are working closely with law enforcement as they continue their investigation into this matter."
According to court documents obtained by the Daily Mail, Swain's ex-husband shared messages he found with Washington's Department of Children, Youth, and Families.
In one alleged exchange, one of Swain's adopted sons reportedly asked if he could be in her bed "again, just once."
"No," Swain allegedly replied. "I love you so much."
"Nothing like that is ever going to happen. You will find someone who you love being with like that and care about," she allegedly added.
Police say the messages became part of the evidence that led to the investigation.
Court documents state that one of the alleged relationships began in December, when one of the boys was still 17 years old.
Investigators noted that Swain had adopted one of the teens after first meeting him as a third-grade student in her classroom in 2017.
During police interviews, one of the boys allegedly told investigators he had sex with Swain "many times," including just two days before speaking with officers.
Per court filings, the teen said Swain allegedly asked him: "Should we be doing this?" during their first encounter, to which he replied: "Yes."
He later sent a message saying he "wanted it to happen again."
The teen also reportedly told police the situation felt "normal" because they had "cuddled since he was young".
When asked for further details, he allegedly responded: "Things got handsy, that's all I'm going to say."
The teacher initially denied having any inappropriate contact with the teen.
Court records state that she later told officials she did not know why but she "leaned in," adding that she was "like half asleep or something" before pushing his hand away from her leg.
She also denied having a relationship with the second adopted son before later admitting she had been with him starting in February 2026.
Swain was arrested on June 2 on suspicion of first- and second-degree incest charges after the messages were reported by her ex-husband.
In Washington state, first-degree incest charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Second-degree incest charges and first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor carry maximum penalties of five years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
Swain's trial is currently scheduled for October.

Newly uncovered text messages have revealed the disturbing and inappropriate relationship between McKenna Kindred, a married high school teacher, and a 17-year-old student from Spokane, Washington.
The relationship, which began after months of flirtatious online exchanges, culminated in a sexual encounter in November 2022 at Kindred's home while her husband, Kyle Kindred, was away on a hunting trip.
The explicit messages exchanged between Kindred, who was 25 at the time, and the teen provide details of their relationship.
In one message, Kindred wrote (via the Daily Mail): “I was sad when you had to leave my room… when other girls talk about you in my class I could feel myself getting mad.” She also told the youngster, “I really like being touched by you.”
In another, she messaged the boy: “We almost got caught. I was sad when that student walked in when he did. I wanted you to hold me. I really like being touched by you.”
The teen messaged her saying, “Mom glad I can satisfy you.” Prosecutors say Kindred “liked” the message.
He also asked whether she had used a sex toy while thinking about him, and she replied: “I did.”
When the boy said she should have recorded it so he could watch later, Kindred is said to have responded: “Hm next time I need to relearn Snapchat haha.”
These texts were discovered after the boy's friend reportedly accessed his Instagram account and found the conversations.
Screenshots were shared with a teacher, who then contacted the authorities, sparking an investigation.
The teen later detailed the encounter to police, stating that he arrived at Kindred's home between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
They began by watching a movie and kissing, before progressing to sexual activity. He explained that they first had intercourse on the couch for about 10 minutes, before moving to Kindred’s bedroom, where they continued until around 10:00 p.m.
After showering and hanging out, the teen left at around 11:30 p.m. Authorities believe this was the only sexual encounter between the pair.
Further evidence surfaced when the boy's mother, Ashley Beckley, provided investigators with explicit photos and videos exchanged between her son and Kindred.
This included images of Kindred sending her son pictures of her breasts and a message in which she discussed using a sex toy.
The mother also informed police about a disturbing text where Kindred admitted to using a toy while thinking about the boy.
While Washington law permits consensual sexual activity at the age of 16, authority figures like teachers can still be charged with sexual misconduct when they engage in sexual activity with minors under 18.
Kindred was arrested in December 2022 and later confessed to first-degree sexual misconduct.
In March 2024, she pleaded guilty to amended charges of second-degree sexual misconduct with a minor and communication with a minor for immoral purposes.
In her emotional court statement, Kindred expressed deep regret for her actions. “I am truly sorry for my actions. I know that this past year has been enormously stressful for all involved," cited by The Sun.
“As a result of my actions I’ve lost my career, valuable friendships, freedoms and have let down countless people who placed their trust in me," she continued. “My mental health has also been severely affected by this event. I am deeply ashamed of the pain I have caused.”
It was reported that Kindred's husband stood by her and that the pair is still married. According to Daily Mail, property records reveal that the couple moved from Washington to Idaho, where they bought a home near Boise for nearly $500,000 in June 2024, months after her sentencing.
Kindred completed the requirements of her sentence and was formally discharged in May 2025.
She has since voluntarily surrendered her teaching license following an investigation by Idaho’s Professional Standards Commission. It remains unclear whether she is currently employed.
In recent weeks, we have heard a worrying amount of news reports about female teachers engaging in inappropriate relationships with their students. First, there was the married teacher who purchased drugs for and had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy; then, a religious studies teacher was prosecuted for sleeping with a 17-year-old; and, just earlier this week, it transpired that an Arizona educator had performed a sex act on a boy who was just 13 years of age.
Needless to say, it's a widespread problem - and more cases of statutory rape between teachers and students are still emerging.
Last week, a former teacher in Ohio pleaded guilty to criminal charges after having a child with a student whom she had legally adopted.
Laura Lynn Cross, a 37-year-old woman who used to teach English at the Buchtel High School in Ohio, admitted to three counts of sexual battery in court last Friday. The victim in question is a young man, whom Cross originally became sexually involved with back in 2012 or 2013 - at which time he was just 15 or 16-years-old.
Cross' relationship with the boy apparently began when she invited him to use her swimming pool. From that point, the pair began regularly sleeping together, despite him being a legal minor. Matters were complicated even further when, in 2015, the teacher resigned from her post at the school and asked the boy's mother if she could become his legal guardian.
The English teacher apparently stated that she wanted to "mentor" the child, and was subsequently granted partial custody. The couple then moved in together.
In June of that year, however, the teen's mother filed a police complaint about Cross' involvement with her son. At first, no criminal charges were filed. But when authorities later learned that Cross had given birth to a baby fathered by her former student, they had no choice but to pursue the matter.
The boy's father, who did not want to be named, voiced his disgust over the situation to WEWS-TV. "First of all, she’s a schoolteacher," he said. "To get aroused by a child, basically you have to be a sick individual."
He also claimed that he had raised concerns with the school and the police as early on as 2012 (though some sources are saying that the relationship did not begin until 2013), but no action was taken against Cross.
"It was a straight failure from the system. From the school and definitely from the police," the father said. "I was told by the school that she had a 'hold' on him and he was not cooperating so basically they can't do nothing with it."
Though some have tried to argue that the boy voluntarily entered into the relationship, the law states that he was too young to give consent to anything of a sexual nature. Plus, as Cross was the teen's English teacher when she first pursued him, she had a duty of care that she obviously failed to fulfill.
Cross is set to be sentenced on May 24th.
Although it's a career path that I would never want to go down, I do have a lot of time and respect for teachers. It must be hard to control a classroom of annoying, hormonal and mouthy teenagers on top of trying to teach them about subjects that they have little-to-no interest in (AKA Algebra).
However, while the majority of teachers are wholly professional individuals who are there to try and shape the leaders of the future, some do forget about their code of conduct.
As a former high school pupil, I know what teenagers can be like. Don't ask me why, but plenty of students - predominately boys - feel like there is a chance that their teachers might fancy them and engage in some form of sexual activity with them. Of course, in the majority of cases, this doesn't tend to be the case. But, there are those rare occasions when it does actually happen.
A married middle school science teacher has been arrested for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old male pupil. Stephanie Peterson was arrested on Wednesday morning in her home in New Smyrna, Florida, after the boy had come forward and confided in his parents.
The 8th grader told them that his 26-year-old teacher, whose married name is Stephanie Ferri, picked him up from home at 11pm and spent hours with him in private after school. The student also alleges that Peterson sent him nude images of herself and supplied him with marijuana and a 'bowl to smoke it'.
The boy is also reported to have told his parents that the relationship with his teacher made his grades suffer.
Peterson has now been booked into county jail on a charge of lewd or lascivious battery and one count of transmitting harmful materials to a child. Volusia County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest on their Facebook page.
According to investigators, it's alleged that the relationship between Peterson and the boy began in November and she resigned from her job on Monday, a day before she was arrested.
According to reports, Peterson told the boy that he could not tell anyone about their relationship when they were together.
The teacher is married to her husband Brandon and they have been married since 2015 and do not have any children together. After her arrested, they both deleted their social media profiles.
Peterson was booked into county jail on a $25,000 bond and it's not been confirmed when her trial will start.
Peterson can have no complaints about her arrest, seeing as it was a huge breach of trust, let alone being completely illegal. Given that she will now be a registered sex offender, I doubt she'll be teaching anytime soon and, seeing as she has also had an affair, she may lose her relationship as well.
Text messages allegedly sent by a 24-year-old Wisconsin teacher to her 11-year-old student have been revealed following her arrest.
Madison Bergmann, 24, has been charged with one count of first-degree child sexual assault with a child under age 13, according to CBS News, after the boy's mother allegedly found messages between the pair.
According to the outlet, police were called to River Crest Elementary School in Hudson, in regards to "inappropriate conduct between a current teacher and a 5th grade student."
Now, disturbing messages allegedly sent by the teacher, have been revealed.
The alleged relationship between the teacher and the 11-year-old boy came to light after his mother found text messages on his phone after overhearing the pair talking on the phone, according to charging documents.
The child told investigators that he and Bergmann had talked "almost daily" since he got her number when the two of them and his mother went skiing together over the winter break.
According to the boy, he and Bergmann would also write notes to each other all day, with officers allegedly finding handwritten noted in a folder with the boy's name on it inside Bergmann's backpack.
Police summarized the interaction between the two, stating: "In her notes, she tells him she loves him, wants to kiss him, he turns her on, and that she is obsessed with him."
According to the documents, Bergmann allegedly wrote in one of the notes: "One of my cousins is in the 5th grade and I can't imagine a man talking to her how we talk. I know we have a special relationship and I do love you more than anyone in the world but I have to be the adult here and stop."
Law & Crime reports that in another exchange, the boy told her: "Haha bro I just want to make out with you," to which Bergmann allegedly replied: "I do too! Like alllll the time."
The child also allegedly told investigators that the two had kissed several times and had spoken about having sex, according to KSTP.
Bergmann appeared in court on Thursday and was released on a $25,000 bond, with Law & Crime reporting that she was also put on leave from her job and barred from the school property, as well as being ordered to have no contact with the child in question or anyone under the age of 18.
She is also reportedly banned from contacting any students, staff, or parents from the school, and must wear a GPS monitor while out on bond, and can't travel more than 100 miles from Hudson, Wisconsin.
Hudson School District sent a message to families, according to KSTP, reading: "Learning about a school staff member and alleged inappropriate conduct that breaches trust is deeply troubling for all of us.
"We understand the gravity of this situation and are committed to providing the necessary support for any child who may be impacted.
"We kindly request the school community to respect the privacy of Hudson students and their families and refrain from spreading rumors or speculation. The School District counseling staff are available to help any child or staff who may be experiencing difficulties with this news."
Bergmann reportedly got engaged in December and had been due to get married in July, however, her fiancé Sam Hickman reportedly called it off as soon as the allegations came to light.
A friend of her fiancé, who wished to remain anonymous, told the New York Post: "It’s been indefinitely postponed, and it probably won’t happen. Sam is really upset and heartbroken.
"He’s embarrassed and p**sed. He didn’t deserve this. Everyone is p**sed."
The insider added that it was a mutual decision to call off the wedding, explaining: "It was more like, 'Well obviously it’s not going to happen this summer.' Pretty much all that there is to say.
"He says it’s f**ked up that she cheated with a little kid. He’s really, really hurt. Not talking too much about it, just like 'this is f**ked up'. He’s still in shock.
"Not only did she cheat on him, but she cheated with a little kid."
A progress hearing has been set for May 30.
New disturbing texts between a US teacher who was convicted of sexual misconduct and the 17-year-old boy she was sleeping with have been uncovered.
McKenna Kindred, 28, was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct and inappropriate communication with a minor, following her arrest in April 2023.
She would plead guilty to both charges, as the teacher admitted to sneaking the student into the apartment, which she shared with her husband.
The teacher was based in Spokane, Washington, at the time, and despite the case, she is still with her partner.
While McKenna wasn't given jail time, she must register as a sex offender for ten years, while also serving a year of probation and a two-year suspended sentence.
New messages have now resurfaced, over two years on from the teacher's sentencing, back in April 2024.
McKenna's texts to the 17-year-old featured several inappropriate claims, and more claims have unravelled recently.
The Daily Mail has discovered more details about her crimes via a records request made to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.
One of these involved the teacher admitting that her husband, Kyle Kindred, warned her about her "hot" looks and how they may cause issues at work.
She also complained about her husband, who is still living with her, in detail.
When asked by the student if her husband got "mad" at her, the teacher replied: "Haha not like mad mad, more like 'you need to be careful. You're hot and kids know it and you can get in trouble if you're not careful,'" according to police records.
This would come to the fore in November 2022, with the teacher have a "sex marathon" with the 17-year-old in question, in her marital bed while Kyle was away on a hunting trip out of town.
The teenager's mother would report the sexual encounter to the police just one month after it unfolded.
McKenna sent many texts to the boy, a student at Central Valley High School, about her husband.
The police files revealed that she complained to the teen about her bad mood, writing: "I'm not grumpy till he gets home. So you help me more than you know."
She then went on to explain a petty argument she'd had with Kyle that took place once he arrived home, telling him she was glad she was being "pleasant tonight and not grumpy with me."
Apparently, she and Kyle argued until he suggested that they go to Wendy's for dinner, as she wrote: "So we got there and I said 'don't order yet, I don't know what I want', and then he started ordering and so then he was like 'what do you want?'
"And I said 'I have no clue! I said wait a minute', and he said 'okay drama, what do you want', then I said 'nothing, I'll eat something at home.'"
She ended up going home without eating, according to the texts.
