Prepping expert reveals 5 foods to stockpile for disaster
A prepping expert has shared his take on what food you should pack if everything goes seriously wrong.
So, with the ongoing threat of nuclear war hanging over us more than ever, perhaps it’s time we started doing our own prep.
Prepping for the apocalypse
It’s not just people online and those off-grid who are prepping for the worst, in fact the US government just announced FORTRESS plans for if things go badly wrong, and the UK government has launched a ‘Be Ready’ campaign that ominously warns people to start stockpiling important stuff in the event of something really bad.
Exactly what that ‘something really bad’ could be depends on the extent of your existential dread and the limits of your imagination.
Everything from bad weather to full-scale nuclear annihilation is on the table.
With that in mind, let’s have a look into what one prepper thinks you should pack food-wise if - as they say in the business - the SHTF.
That’s… something hitting a fan, in case you hadn’t worked it out.
Foods to take in the event of a disaster
This is all important as being ready for a disaster can seriously make all the difference, and can help mitigate the fallout - pun intended.
YouTuber Andrew Thomas Price has made a helpful guide, but perhaps the most important bit of advice is to make sure that you have the right things before the shortages come.
The first food he recommends is white rice.
It’s cheap, it’s versatile, it gives you much-needed carbohydrates for energy, and it’ll keep long term.
In a cool, dry place in a bag it’ll go for a long time without going bad.
Secondly, he advises bringing beans and legumes.
Again, they are good for storage, they have protein and fiber and - crucially - go with rice.
You want to survive, but better if it is also a coherent meal, too.
It also prevents appetite fatigue, as you can do a lot with them.
Next on this apocalyptic shopping list is canned veggies and fruits.
They can survive longer than fresh fruit, but also contain much-needed vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that you’ll need.
Sitting out a nuclear winter, you're going to need plenty of that good stuff.
Which brings us to the next item - canned meats and fish.
The same reason really, but with added protein.
They require little work to get a meal out of, and provide fat and energy as well - all stuff that you need for the balanced post-apocalyptic diet.
Lastly, and this is a bit out of left field, he suggests taking honey.
It’s long-lasting - a bit of a theme here - and provides natural sugars for energy.
It can also be used for skincare and wound care, so it’s a real Swiss Army knife of a food.
What does this mean in big picture terms?
Packing long-lasting, durable, versatile foods will mean that you have the best chance of surviving for longer and being able to subsist for longer come what may.
Obviously it goes without saying that you’ll need bottled water in this as well, as well as cooking supplies and probably some ready to eat vitamins.
If you plan a realistic and practical stockpile, you’ll stand the best chance.
After all, as they say, failure to prepare is to prepare for failure.
Ultimately, it can’t hurt to have this stuff, so long as we all just hope we never had to use it.
