Octavia Spencer has written a public apology to Britney Spears and Sam Asghari after making a "prenup" comment on the couple's engagement announcement.
The 39-year-old popstar announced her engagement to the 27-year-old actor and a fitness trainer on Sunday night, sharing several images and videos with her 34 million Instagram followers.
Spears captioned the post: "I can’t f***ing believe it".
However, despite an outpouring of congratulations, there were also several comments calling for the 'Womanizer' singer to ensure she makes her new fiancé sign a prenuptial agreement. One of the people who commented on this sentiment was 51-year-old Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer.
The Hidden Figures actor simply commented on Britney's post with: "Make him sign a prenup."
As you can see from the screenshot below (captured on Monday), the comment received thousands of 'likes' from like-minded fans:
Asghari did respond to the calls for a prenup on Monday, sharing an Instagram Story which read: "That you to everyone who is concerned about The prenup! Of course we're getting iron clad prenup to protect my jeep and shoe collection [in case] she dumps me one day".
But just days after sharing her engagement news, Spears deactivated her Instagram account, telling her fans on Twitter: "Don’t worry folks … just taking a little break from social media to celebrate my engagement!!!! I’ll be back soon".
But it seems like since sharing her initial comment, Spencer regrets making what she has since claimed was a "joke".
Taking to her own Instagram account, the actor shared a snap of both Britney and Sam, along with the following caption: "Y’all, a few days ago Sam and Britney announced their engagement and me being me I made a joke. My intention was to make them laugh not cause pain.
"I’ve reached out to this lovely couple privately to apologize and now want to restore just a smidge of happiness they were robbed of."
She added: "Britney’s fans have seen her through a lot of pain and she’s found happiness. We’re thrilled for her. So let’s show them love."
The post has been positively received by many of Spencer's 1.4 million followers, including Asghari himself, who replied saying: "You are very kind to clarify but [I] have no hard feelings whatsoever. Jokes and misconceptions come with the territory."
That being said, I wonder if Spencer will be receiving an invite to the wedding?
