One heartbreaking detail has emerged after an 11-year-old girl was shot outside a McDonald's.
A young girl named Dora Belen Rivera and her father, Oscar Roman Miron, were struck by bullets while sitting in a vehicle outside the fast food chain in Hallandale Beach, Florida, on June 27.
Dora was shot in the head, while her father was struck in the leg. Her two younger siblings, aged two and five, escaped without injury.
After the horrific incident, Dora was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.
According to a GoFundMe set up by her family, doctors were unable to remove the bullet.
"Doctors have advised the family that they are not removing the bullet at this time because doing so could cause even greater harm," the fundraiser page read.
The young girl is now recovering, but medics say she will continue "to receive specialized medical care and faces a long road to recovery".
"We are asking for your support during this incredibly difficult time. The funds raised will help cover medical expenses, ongoing treatment, rehabilitation, lost income, and everyday living expenses while Oscar and his family focus entirely on their daughter's recovery and helping all three children heal from this traumatic experience," the GoFundMe stated.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the operation, Dora thanked the emergency responders and medical staff who helped save her life.
"Thank you for everything," she said. "Thank you for the police. Thank you for the firefighters. Thank you for the doctors... It feels like I have another chance."
Police have said Dora and her family were not the intended victims, per The Sun.
Police allege the shooting happened after 18-year-old McDonald's employee Ralph N-Kosi Blue III became involved in an altercation in the restaurant's parking lot while heading into work.
Investigators say Blue fired a weapon at someone who was running toward him, but the shots instead hit the family's vehicle.
An arrest report obtained by NBC Miami states that surveillance footage showed a man chasing Blue before taking cover on the opposite side of the SUV occupied by Dora and her father. Blue is then seen raising his weapon and pulling the trigger.
He has since been charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill.
In a statement following the shooting, Hallandale Beach McDonald's owner Brad Ashlin confirmed the employee was no longer with the company.
"We are devastated by the shooting that occurred outside our restaurant. Our thoughts are with the father and young daughter who were injured, as well as their family during this difficult time," Ashlin said.
"The individual reported to be involved is no longer employed at our organization. We will continue to support the Hallandale Beach Police Department, including providing surveillance footage and any assistance needed for their investigation," he added.
While the 11-year-old girl continues her recovery, her father has since been discharged from the hospital. However, he said the family has been left deeply traumatized by the incident.

The mother of a Uvalde survivor has said that her daughter was hospitalized on the verge of a heart attack after she visited the memorial of a friend who died in last month's shooting.
Eleven-year-old IIliana Treviño lost her best friend, Amerie Jo Garza, in the May 24 attack at Robb Elementary School.
IIliana's mother, Jessica Treviño, told People that 10-year-old Amerie would protect her daughter from bullies at school.
When she visited Amerie's memorial last week, Iliana's heart rate rapidly shot up. She was then rushed to the hospital, where medics told the concerned mom that IIliana was close to having a heart attack. More than a week later, she remains in hospital.
"I think it's just from a broken heart that we need to work on healing," Treviño, 40, told the outlet, adding that IIliana had no previous medical issues before this incident occurred.
"Everything just broke her in half, and she feels the fear of being bullied again," she says.
The fourth grade student survived the rampage after the shooter walked past her classroom. But Amerie was shot dead while trying to dial 911 on her cell phone, Amerie's grandmother, Berlinda Arreola said.
When Illiana learned that her friend was one of the victims, she "just started screaming and crying," Treviño revealed. "I told her, 'I'm sorry, baby. There's just some ugly people in the world.'"
When Treviño took her daughter to leave a teddy bear and flowers at the memorial site for Amerie, her heart rate spiked.
"The hospital told me, 'Your daughter's going into cardiac arrest.' And I said, 'What?'" Treviño recalled. "Her heart [rate] skyrocketed because she couldn't take the trauma ... all the trauma and pain from it."
Illiana is currently at a hospital in San Antonio.
The massacre in the mostly Latino town of Uvalde was the deadliest shooting at a school in the US since 20 children and six adults were shot dead at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012.
The 18-year-old gunman, Salvador Ramos, entered Robb Elementary School at around 11:32 AM. He was armed with a handgun and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle before "horrifically, incomprehensibly" opening fire, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said.
Before the mass shooting, the teen shot his grandmother, Celia "Sally" Martinez Gonzales, and crashed his car near the school. He was eventually shot dead by US Border Patrol agents. Nineteen children and two adults were killed in Ramos' attack on one fourth-grade classroom.
The family of a girl who survived Tuesday's Texas school shooting by covering herself in blood is crowdfunding for her therapy and medical treatment.
The nation continues to mourn the tragic events that occurred in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24.
On Tuesday morning, an 18-year-old gunman - named by authorities as Salvador Ramos - entered Robb Elementary School carrying a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, and high-capacity magazines. After opening fire on a classroom, he ultimately killed 19 children between the ages of nine and 11 and two teachers.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that one of the students inside the classroom survived after covering herself with blood.
In an interview with NBC Los Angeles, the aunt and godmother of 11-year-old Miah Cerrillo recalled how the youngster made it through the horrific ordeal alive.
"Miah got some blood and put it on herself so she could pretend she was dead," godmother Blanca Rivera said. "It's too much for me to play that scene over and over again, but that's what my sister-in-law said is that she saw her friend full of blood and she got blood and put it on herself."
Rivera also explained that the child is struggling to cope with the trauma of what happened.
"Around midnight my sister-in-law called me and she was just crying, like 'I think it just hit Miah. I think everything came to reality now,'" Rivera said.
Blanca Rivera explained how her 11-year-old niece made it through the attack alive, and how she is struggling to cope with the trauma of what she witnessed.
"Around midnight my sister-in-law called me and she was just crying, like 'I think it just hit Miah. I think everything came to reality now,'" she said.
Miah's teacher, Irma Garcia, and many of her classmates were killed in the deadly attack.
Now, Miah's mom has started a GoFundMe in order to help her daughter through the trauma of what she experienced.
"Hello my name is Abigale [Veloz] my daughter is [Miah Cerrillo] she is a survivora from the Uvalde school shooting," the mom writes on the crowdfunding page. "Her class room was one of the main rooms that got targeted. [With] that [being] said we are asking if people could please donate to her Gofundme she will need a lot of help with all the trauma that she is going through.
"My daughter is amazing person and is a very good sister to her siblings," Cerrillo writes, before adding: "We will need help with her medical expenses that were caused by the bullet fragment on her back."
As of this writing, more than $340,000 has been raised from nearly 9,000 donations.
Our thoughts continue to go out to everybody affected by this horrendous tragedy...

The family of a Texas school shooting survivor has described how the 11-year-old saved herself by smearing blood on herself and playing dead when the gunman started shooting.
On Tuesday (May 24), an 18-year-old stormed Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and opened fire on a 4th-grade class. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed in the horrific massacre.
One of the students inside the classroom who survived was Miah Cerrillo. In an interview with NBC Los Angeles, Miah's aunt and godmother Blanca Rivera explained how her 11-year-old niece made it through the attack alive, and how she is struggling to cope with the trauma of what she witnessed.
Rivera told the outlet that it was midnight when her sister-in-law called and told her what had happened.
"Around midnight my sister-in-law called me and she was just crying, like 'I think it just hit Miah. I think everything came to reality now,'" she said.
She went on to say how Miah's teacher - Irma Garcia - and many of her classmates were killed in the deadly attack, which she only survived by a combination of luck and quick thinking.
"Miah got some blood and put it on herself so she could pretend she was dead," Rivera said. "It's too much for me to play that scene over and over again, but that's what my sister-in-law said is that she saw her friend full of blood and she got blood and put it on herself."
Rivera went on to say that her niece had still been injured, saying: "My brother said she had bullet fragments in her back."
However, after being treated at the hospital she has since been released and taken home by her parents.
While her physical injuries may be on the mend, Rivera made it clear that psychologically and emotionally it would be much harder for Miah to recover from her traumatizing experience.
"At this point, we just have to pray and ask God to help us move forward through this situation, I know it's traumatizing as it is," she said.
A teenage girl who was left orphaned by last week's Texas elementary school shooting has written a heartbreaking tribute to her parents.
Irma Garcia, 48, was one of two teachers who was killed after 18-year-old Salvador Ramos barricaded himself in a classroom and opened fire with an AK15 rifle at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24.
Fourth-grade teacher Eva Mireles and 19 students were also tragically killed in the vicious attack, marking this as the deadliest school shooting since the Sandy Hook Elementary school tragedy in 2012.
Irma's husband Joe Garcia suffered a fatal heart attack on Thursday (May 26) - two days after his wife's death - and just hours after laying down flowers at his wife's memorial.
The couple leaves behind four children - Cristan, 23, Jose, 19, Lyliana, 15, and their youngest daughter Alysandra, 13.
The couple's 15-year-old daughter recently visited the site of her parents' memorial to pay tribute to them.
Per the Mirror, she shared the following written tribute: "Dad, I know this was too much for you. Your heart could not take it. I will spend the rest of my life fighting for you and mom. Your names will not be forgotten. Your daughter, Lyliana."
A notice about the couple was also posted on the local mortuary, which reads: "Irma Linda Garcia of Uvalde, Texas, was welcomed by our Lord and Saviour while selflessly protecting her angels on May 24, 2022, in Uvalde, Texas, at the age of 48.
"Jose Antonio Garcia joined the love of his life and was also welcomed into the arms of his wife, Irma, and our Lord on May 26, 2022."
The couple was married for 24 years and will be buried together following a private ceremony at Uvalde's Sacred Heart Church.
Last week, Joe’s cousin Debra Austin shared news of his death via a GoFundMe page dedicated to the pair, which has since raised over $2.7 million.
Joe and Irma's memorial was visited by the families in the Uvalde community, including the parents of 10-year-old Annabell Rodriguez who also lost her life during the school shooting. Her parents read tributes to her at the memorial this weekend.
Before arriving at the school, the gunman had also shot his grandma, 66-year-old Celia Gonzalez, who is currently being treated in hospital for her injuries, alongside the wounded children who survived the attack.
Ramos was later shot dead by police at the scene of the crime.
