The split caused quite a bit of controversy, with some speculating about whether Urban had quickly moved on, and even suggesting that there might have been some strange clauses in their pre-nuptial agreement based around Urban’s substance misuse past.

Now, 58-year-old Kidman has spoken out about the end of the marriage for the first time, sitting down to chat about her upcoming project, the Practical Magic sequel, as well as Prime Video series Scarpetta.

She was asked if she was ‘doing alright’ by the interviewer and responded: "I am, because I’m always going to be moving toward what’s good.”

Kidman went on to say that she is ‘grateful’ for her family and ‘keeping them as is and moving forward’.

“That’s that,” she concluded.

On the split from Urban, she further added: "Everything else I don’t discuss out of respect. I’m staying in a place of, 'We are a family,' and that’s what we’ll continue to be.

“My beautiful girls, my darlings, who are suddenly women."

Kidman and Urban were together for decades

Kidman and the music star, 58, met back in 2005 before marrying the next year in 2006.

Those comments about her divorce came after a question from Variety about whether ‘every year’ is her year.

She opened up: “Well, not last year. I was quiet. I had other things going on. I was in my shell.”

Asked if she is now ready to emerge, she said: "Now I’m in a place of saying, '2026. Here we go.' I have Practical Magic with [Sandra Bullock]. I’ll be in full witch mode."

The pair’s divorce went through on January 6, citing ‘’experienced marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences’.

The couple agreed how to divide up their life together and Kidman was granted custody of the two children, although both sides agreed to keep joint decision-making about their daughters’ lives and futures.

Nicole Kidman has made a huge request as she officially files for divorce from Keith Urban.

The 58-year-old Hollywood star has filed papers to end her 19 years of marriage to Urban, citing “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences.”

As part of the divorce proceedings, Kidman has requested to be the primary residential parent of the couple’s two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.

According to the court documents, the Oscar-winning star would have the girls for 306 days of the year, while the 57-year-old country singer would take them for the remaining 59 days.

It has been reported that both parties have committed to providing a “loving, stable, consistent, and nurturing relationship” with their daughters despite the separation, per The Guardian.

“They will not speak badly of each other or the members of the family of the other parent.

"They will encourage each child to continue to love the other parent and be comfortable in both families," the documents added.

The divorce filing also includes details about the couple’s financial arrangements.

Both parents are listed as earning more than $100,000 per month, and neither will seek child or spousal support.

The 'Blue Ain't Your Color' singer has reportedly “prepaid all child support obligations,” and the couple has agreed to an equal division of joint assets, keeping personal earnings and royalties separate.

Kidman and Urban, both raised in Australia, met in 2005 at a Los Angeles event celebrating Australians in the entertainment industry. 

They got married in the following year at a private ceremony in Sydney.

The couple, who have been separated since the beginning of summer, signed their divorce and parenting agreements in August and September.

Urban signed the documents on August 29, while Kidman followed on September 6.

The divorce will not be finalized until at least 90 days after the filing, in accordance with Tennessee law.

Additionally, both parents are required to attend a parenting seminar within 60 days of the filing, per the Daily Mail.

Past Tensions and Supportive Words Despite Separation

While the couple has remained largely private about the details of their separation, there have been signs of tension leading up to the divorce.

In July, Urban abruptly ended a live radio interview when asked how he felt about his wife filming love scenes with younger actors like Zac Efron.

The interview was cut short, with the radio producers suggesting the 'Somebody Like You' musician's team had ended the call. "I thought we were vibing with Keith,” host Max Burford commented, while co-host Hayley Pearson added: “He hates us. I knew that was going to happen.”

Despite the end of their marriage, both stars have spoken warmly of each other in the past.

Urban’s emotional tribute to Kidman at her AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony last year reflected their deep bond.

He opened up about how she supported him through his struggles with substance abuse early in their marriage, saying: “We got married in 2006, and barely four months into our marriage, the addictions that I had done really nothing about blew our marriage to smithereens."

"Four months into a marriage, and I'm in rehab for three months with no idea what was going to happen to us."

“Nic pushed through every negative voice… and she chose love," he continued.

"And here we are tonight, 18 years later. Her capacity to love is like no one I've ever met."

A resurfaced comment made by Urban to journalists last year might have hinted at something else going on in the celebrity pair’s relationship. 

The latest news on the couple’s pending divorce has just confirmed something that may have been in the post.

Musician Urban and his movie star wife were the darlings of Hollywood for nearly two decades. 

The pair - despite having disagreements over some of Kidman’s steamier scenes - appeared to be a pretty strong couple. 

Even comments from one of her youthful co-stars couldn’t derail them. 

Until now, that is. 

With the pair separated and set to divorce, which could prove to be an interesting legal battle if claims about a ‘cocaine clause’ in the agreement are to be believed, minds have been cast back to earlier encounters with the pair, and to whether the signs were there to read, despite not being immediately clear. 

In the case of one journalist from The Times, the comment was simply: “I just don’t want to give you guys a headline about my wife.”

According to Times commissioning editor for culture and books Ed Potton: “The signs were there, flashing in neon, when I spoke to Keith Urban a year ago. 

“Sitting in his sunlit garden in Nashville, the country singer was charm personified until the conversation turned (well, until I turned it) to Nicole Kidman, his much more famous spouse.”

Potton continued: “Urban chatted engagingly about the album he was plugging, But soon as Kidman’s name came up, however, the shield was raised.⁠”

Why have Kidman and Urban split up after all this time?

The pair, who share two daughters, have reportedly been living apart for months before this news emerged, and Urban has spoken candidly in the past about problems he faced with addiction. 

In a heartfelt speech at a June 2024 gala, he said: “We got married in 2006, and barely four months into our marriage, the addictions that I had done really nothing about blew our marriage to smithereens,

“Four months into a marriage, and I'm in rehab for three months with no idea what was going to happen to us.”

He added: “Nic pushed through every negative voice. I'm sure even some of her own, and she chose love."

However, the strain over roles that Kidman played - often ones that included sex scenes - took a toll on their relationship. 

He even ended an interview earlier this year because of a question about his wife’s work, specifically with Zac Efron. 

Papers filed in Nashville report that the pair eventually decided to split because of ‘marital difficulties and irreconcilable difficulties’.

A parenting plan document states: “The mother and father will behave with each other and each child so as to provide a loving, stable, consistent, and nurturing relationship with the child even though they are divorced,

“They will not speak badly of each other or the members of the family of the other parent. 

“They will encourage each child to continue to love the other parent and be comfortable in both families.”
