At this weekend’s army parade celebrating the King’s official birthday, Prince William appeared to save his father from making an embarrassing mistake.
The Trooping of the Colour is the most colorful ceremonial event held annually to celebrate the British sovereign's official birthday, which is not the day they were actually born.
Following a tradition that has been going on for over 260 years, the royal family stepped out on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the Royal Air Force flypast, after the military ceremony at Horse Guards Parade and equestrian procession.
However, King Charles III, 77, almost made a grave blunder when he appeared to turn and leave the balcony alongside his wife, Queen Camilla, 78. After a subtle exchange with his son, the monarch backtracked and turned back to face the crowd moments before they began to sing the national anthem.
The couple was accompanied by Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight, and other royal family members while they listened to 'God Save the King' being played to the large crowd.
When the rendition finished, the King and Queen gave another round of iconic royal waves before retreating into the Centre Room of the palace, followed by the rest of the family.
As with any balcony appearance, there were a number of unexpected moments picked up on by people in the audience.
The cheeky youngest prince, Louis, broke away from his family to get a better view of the Red Arrows flypast.
Shortly after the event, King Charles and Queen Camilla expressed their gratitude to the service people who took part in an official statement that said: "With thanks to the 1,400 members of the Armed Forces who took part in today’s Trooping the Colour, and with special mention to the Grenadier Guards who trooped their new Colour. We salute you."
The Duke of Kent, first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth, played no part in the King's Birthday Parade, but stood on the balcony beside the family, looking alone, positioned a few metres away from the rest of the family.
The duke drew attention to himself after he was spotted raising his phone to video the crowds gathered below.
Fans online were quick to share their sympathies online, with one person saying: "Why was the wonderful Duke of Kent right down one end of the balcony by himself? Couldn't someone go and stand with him, or have him move over near the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester? I was in tears. He looked so alone."

Since entering the royal family last month, Meghan Markle has found herself making headlines every week for a variety of different reasons. On the one hand, you've got those who adore the new Duchess of Sussex. Meghan's background, former career and outspoken feminism make her an interesting and modern member of the archaic and outdated family. However, some people aren't so keen.
Last weekend, Meghan - alongside the rest of her new family - attended the Trooping the Colour: a 260-year-old tradition to honour the reigning monarch's birthday. According to the official royal website, "over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together each June in a great display of military precision, horsemanship and fanfare to mark The Queen's official birthday."
The Duchess looked absolutely gorgeous in her bespoke Carolina Herrera dress and matching Philip Treacy hat. However, for some harsh critics, Meghan was showing off too much shoulder and they took to Twitter to vent the criticisms: "Off the shoulder is inappropriate day wear at the Trooping or any official engagement," one critic snapped during their commentary on the event.
"I do feel her choice of an off the shoulder dress was pushing it for HRH Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday celebration," wrote another on social media. "I have a feeling she’s going to push the limits a little too much?!"
But, Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, had nothing but praise from Meghan's summery look. "It was deemed by some people to be a bit revealing, but personally I couldn't see any harm in it," Little said about Markle's getup. "She looked great. There are no rules for the birthday parade, but I'm not sure it matters."
While at the ceremony, Meghan could be seen standing on the balcony with the rest of the family. However, it was noted that she was positioned behind Kate Middleton, The Duchess of Sussex. Little says that this is due to the Royals standing in order of their rank.
"She was not as prominent perhaps as some people might have expected, but there's a pecking order," Little told People. "There was no slight intended, but William being the older, more senior brother would go out first with his wife. She was central rather than the alternative of being in the front row and along the balcony to the left or right."
"[Meghan] was still in a good position," adds Little. "She was central rather than the alternative of being in the front row and along the balcony to the left or right."
A palace source says Meghan’s balcony position "would have come from her. There’s no one laying this out, telling her where to stand. And there were a lot of kids who everyone would want at the front."
So while it may have looked like the Royals were excluding Meghan at the occasion, it turns out she was just following protocol.

Prince Louis stole the show during 2024's Trooping of the Colour, and a lip-reader has shed light on what he was saying.
The entire Royal Family attended the ceremony, which marked the first public appearance of Princess Kate, the Princess of Wales, since announcing her cancer treatment.
The Princess, 42, arrived at Buckingham Palace with her husband, Prince William.
She was later seen in a royal carriage dressed in an all-white ensemble, accompanied by her three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
While the world eagerly anticipated Catherine's appearance following her diagnosis, it was young Louis who drew much of the attention with his dance moves.
On the balcony of Buckingham Palace, Louis was visibly enjoying the music, breaking into a little dance.
Louis, known for his expressive nature, entertained the crowds by pulling faces, yawning, and wiping his nose during the event.
Throughout the day, Louis was seen chatting excitedly with his family.
During the flyover, he appeared mesmerized by the jets' colorful display.
According to lip-reader Gaby Lane, Louis turned to his father, Prince William, exclaiming: "Papa, Papa, Papa, look at all that colour!"
Proud mum Catherine smiled and explained to him that the planes had "dispersed", Lane told The Sun.
During the national anthem, Louis interacted with his older sister, Charlotte, who tried to keep her younger brother in check. Lane reported that Charlotte instructed Louis to "put your hands down."
The family watched the ceremonial parade at Horse Guards Parade, where Louis delighted in dancing to the march of the Scots Guards.
However, Charlotte was not amused by his dance moves. Expert lip-reader Nicola Hickling revealed that Charlotte scolded him, saying: "You have to stop doing that. Watch the parade."
Louis, however, defiantly replied: "I won't," to which Charlotte sternly responded: "Do as you're told." Louis then simply said: "Nope," according to Hickling, per the Mirror.
Another sweet moment occurred as Louis and Catherine traveled down the Mall in a horse-drawn carriage.
Astonished by the large crowds, Louis pointed out the spectators to his mother, saying: "Look over there ma." Catherine responded: "Right, look at that," as reported by Lane.
Princess Catherine received a warm ovation from the supportive crowds, who have rallied around her during her health battle. In March, she revealed she was undergoing treatment for an unspecified form of cancer, having undergone abdominal surgery earlier in the year.
Just a day before the event, Catherine updated her followers about her condition and confirmed her attendance at Trooping the Colour.

Forget Marvel's The Avengers - the most ambitious crossover event in history is a photo of Prince Charles' entire dynasty. Think about it. You haven't seen all those royals assembled for a photo, have you? If you're American, and trying to comprehend the significance, imagine the very first photo of the entire Kardashian-Jenner family. It's just like that! The royals are basically the British version of the Kardashians. (Okay, I'm kidding, don't @ me, Queen Elizabeth II.)
On November 14, Charles, Prince of Wales, and heir apparent to the British throne, celebrated his 70th birthday. It's quite a milestone, but the future king insisted that it just was another working day. His plans included a couple meetings at Clarence House, and a tea party in London with 70 other inspirational people who have turned 70. I hope one of them is Ozzy Ozbourne! (Yes, he's 70 years old, believe it or not. And I think he'd really be the life of this tea party. Especially if a bat flies in.)
The esteemed Prince Charles also guest-edited an issue of Country Life magazine, in which he describes his passion for nature, and blah, blah, blah, you don't really care about this, do you? Let's get to the historic photo, which taken in September, but released today. In this rare, exuberant royal portrait, we see Prince Charles holding his first-born grandson, five-year-old Prince George. Behind them are George's parents, Catherine and William, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Duchess, who's wearing a polka dot midi dress by Alessandra Rich, holds six-month-old Prince Louis, who smiles adorably. Way to behave, Lou!
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, sits next to the birthday boy, wearing a cream dress by Fiona Clare. Next to Camilla sits three-year-old Princess Charlotte, Catherine and William's second born. The couple behind them needs no introduction, as the newest royal couple whom you read about everyday: Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Meghan's wearing a cream sleeveless Givenchy dress, and at the time the photo was taken - again, September - would have been eight weeks pregnant.
The second photo is more candid, showing the royal family cracking up with laughter - possibly because Queen Elizabeth II is mooning them. (She's such a prankster!) Meghan Markle appears to be doubling over with laughter, and Camilla points out something to Princess Charlotte. Prince Charles looks pretty much the same, thrilled to be surrounded by family: his lovely wife, his two children and their lovely wives, and his three grandchildren - soon to be four!
The candid photo reflects how the royal family is attempting to be more modern. Meghan is the first biracial woman to join the family, as well as the first divorcée, and the first to have gone to Catholic school. She's even tried to buck archaic sartorial trends, by wearing the occasional pantsuit and homemade pasta necklace.
Well, happy birthday, Charles! It's fun Keeping Up With The Royals.

Princess Catherine has shared a family photo for Prince William's birthday, showing the fun-loving side of the Royals.
It's been a turbulent year for the Royal Family so far, with the sad news that both King Charles III and Princess Catherine are battling cancer.
Despite the hardships that they are facing, the Royal Family appeared over the weekend for the Trooping of the Colour, marking Catherine's first public engagement since revealing her diagnosis.
The Princess of Wales, 42, arrived at Buckingham Palace with her husband, Prince William.
Later, she was seen in a royal carriage, dressed in an elegant all-white ensemble, accompanied by her three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Also over the weekend, the Princess of Wales shared an image of Prince William and his children for Father's Day.
The snapshot, which was taken on a beach by the royal, shows her three children standing and hugging her husband while staring out to sea.
Less than a week on, and Catherine has shared a similar picture of the future King with his kids, this time from the front.
The joyful image captures the prince leaping into the air with his three young royals - Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte.
The Princess of Wales signed the accompanying message: "Happy birthday Papa, we all love you so much!"
Fans were quick to offer their thoughts, and everyone appeared to have had the same positive reaction.
One person said: "Happy birthday, William! I absolutely love how that photo turned out! Fantastic timing and lighting!"
A second person wrote: "Omg this is such a lovely photo. The Princess is so talented! Happy birthday Prince William!"
A third added: "You spoil us with these amazing photos. Thank you. And yes, we all love you, Prince William. Happy birthday!"
A fourth penned on Instagram: "Possibly the best pic they have ever shared- so relaxed, normal, full of joy."
Regarding the Princess of Wales, she recently released a rare public statement as she continues her battle with cancer.
Despite her understandable absence, Princess Catherine issued an apology for missing the Trooping the Colour rehearsal on June 8.
In a letter to the Irish Guards, where she serves as honorary Colonel, the Princess wrote: "I wanted to write and let you know how proud I am of the entire Regiment ahead of the Colonel’s Review and Trooping the Colour.
"I appreciate everyone trooping this year has been practicing for months, and dedicating many hours to ensuring their uniforms and drills are immaculate. Please pass my apologies to the whole Regiment, however, I do hope that I am able to represent you all once again very soon.
"Please send my very best wishes and good luck to all involved," she continued, signing off as "Colonel Catherine."

Viewers have been left delighted after seeing the antics of Prince Louis throughout the entirety of King Charles' coronation.
Now, Prince Louis is known for being a little cheeky compared to his older brother and sister, and he was no different during today's coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla.
The five-year-old melted the hearts of audiences as he yawned, pointed, and fidgeted about throughout the history-making moment. And things only got more hilarious when the young prince appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace and delighted spectators with some delightful hand gestures.
We first caught a glimpse of the young one in the carriage as he and his family approached Westminster Abbey. Looking out of the window, Louis waved out to thousands of royal fans as they smiled back at him, enjoying his candor.
And he only got cuter and cuter as the ceremony went on.
As his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales waited outside of the main venue ready to go in, we saw Louis standing with his sister Princess Charlotte, eight, both holding hands and standing patiently.
Multiple photos of the pair - and their parents - were shared online, with many praising them for being so professional on such a momentous occasion.
During the event, Prince Louis joined both his siblings out on the front lines where he watched his grandfather get crowned the King of England as well as 14 other Commonwealth realms.
As the 74-year-old monarch and his wife exited the building, the 5-year-old was pictured singing the national anthem proudly while looking out at the historic moment playing out before him.
He and Princess Charlotte exchanged a few words before the little one resorted to yawning and pointing out at things like any other child would do - but the adorable gestures seemed to capture the attention of viewers just because it was Louis.
"Prince Louis yawning what a little legend," this user wrote while another tweeted that he "didn't let his fans down today. He was seen yawning, pointing & whispering. Can’t blame him. It was a long ceremony."
A third was also seemingly impressed writing: "Prince Louis shamelessly yawning during the big moment is exactly my kind of energy."
And this user even pointed out that it was a common theme throughout the day, as they shared photos of Louis yawning prior to the official crowning.
"Prince Louis yawning is a mood," they wrote.
And just to add the cherry on top of the cake, while the King and Queen both descended out to the balcony of Buckingham Palace in order to present themsleves to their loyal followers, Prince Louis appeared on the side alongside his sister (once again) and put both hands up to give a few "window-wiping" waves.
Truly iconic.
We can't wait to see what other entertaining things the little prince has in store for us!
