Millions of Republicans fell for a fake social media account of what they thought was an attractive, young conservative MAGA supporter, but was in fact an AI-generated image made by a man.
‘Emily Hart’, a blonde Republican woman who posed in an American flag bikini, drinking beer and sharing pro-life, anti-woke sentiments, was created by a male medical student named Sam.
He shared content of the fake blonde woman promoting far-right opinions and discussing her love for Jesus, amassing millions of views and likes across social media.
One post read: ‘'If you want a reason to unfollow: Christ is king, abortion is murder, and all illegals must be deported."
The images of the scantily dressed woman went viral as she was praised by Trump fans for her radical honesty and divisive outlook on life.
The profile’s creator, Sam, told Wired: “Every Reel I posted was getting 3 million views, 5 million views.
“I haven’t seen any easier way to make money online.”
Overlaid on an image of ‘Emily’ wearing a MAGA hat and holding a beer, Sam wrote: “Trump should tell all the illegals that he will give them citizenship if they vote Republican and see how fast Democrats want them out of the country.”
Since developing ‘Emily’ in January, she gathered hundreds of thousands of followers with posts about Republicanism, bible studies, and right-wing takes on current affairs.
"Every day I’d write something pro-Christian, pro-Second Amendment, pro-life, anti-woke, and anti-immigration," Sam said.
“POV: You were assigned intelligent at birth, but you identify as liberal”, one post said.
Another was captioned “Of course Democrats protest against ICE… Cuz they are deporting half their voters.”
He quickly began monetizing the content and creating a huge sum of cash from people, likely mostly men, who believed they were following a real influencer.
"Emily’s inventor said: 'The MAGA crowd is made up of super dumb people. And they fall for it.'”
However, this is not the first case of someone cashing in on AI-generated MAGA influencers; last month, America First content creator Jessica Foster went viral.
The account shared fake images of ‘herself’ with Donald Trump, thanking him for his service, made to look as though they were taken in the White House.
There was also a link to an OnlyFans account where the person running it sells foot fetish material, claiming “I’m not a robot” in their bio.
Although Jessica and Emily’s accounts appear to have been taken down by Instagram for violating the rules of not disclosing AI-generated content, the harmful content has already been shared, and the damage has been done.
