Britney Spears is under investigation after she was accused by her longtime housekeeper of battery following an argument over the treatment of her dogs.
TMZ reports that the 39-year-old singer allegedly slapped a phone out of the staff member's hand during the disagreement - an incident that Spears' team deny.
The alleged incident is believed to have taken place on Monday, August 16, at Spears' home.
According to the outlet, the housekeeper told Ventura County Sheriff's deputies that she had taken one of the star's dogs to the vet as she believed there were issues with the way the animal was being treated.
She added that when she returned, Spears made it known that she was displeased with the action taken by the staffer, which resulted in the singer knocking a phone out of the housekeeper's hand.
Following the disagreement, the housekeeper filed a report at the Sheriff's station after initially calling deputies to the house
The officers had attempted to contact Britney in order to hear her account of the alleged altercation, but she reportedly refused to speak with them.
Captain Eric Buschow of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department has since confirmed to PEOPLE, that Spears is being investigated for battery.
Confirming that there were no injuries in the alleged incident, Capt. Buschow added: "Ultimately that investigation will be forwarded to the attorney's office for review. It's a minor misdemeanor battery [investigation]."
The singer's lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, has since released a statement claiming that the accusation is merely "sensational tabloid fodder".
Rosengart said, per the Daily Mail: "This is sensational tabloid fodder. Nothing more than an overblown alleged misdemeanor involving a he-said-she-said regarding a cell phone, with no striking and obviously no injury whatsoever."
He added: "Anyone can make an accusation. This should have been closed immediately."
Now it remains to be seen whether or not the authorities will decide to file a misdemeanor battery charge against Spears.
The new claims come as the 'Toxic' chart-topper pursues an end to the conservatorship, which has seen her father Jamie Spears control her finances and aspects of her professional and personal affairs.
Earlier this month, Jamie appeared to step down from his role as conservator, with his lawyer stating in documents reviewed by TMZ that the 69-year-old father "does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests."
The lawyer said that Jamie will "work with the Court and his daughter's new attorney" to give up the position in favor of a new conservator.

Concerned fans of Britney Spears have contacted the police to conduct a wellness check on the singer after she deleted her Instagram once again.
As reported by TMZ, the 41-year-old musician - who recently addressed a 'manic' episode in a restaurant with her husband Sam Asghari - sparked concern from fans after she suddenly deactivated her social media page.
Her supporters called the Ventura Co. Sheriff's Office to ask that officers be sent to the 'Gimme More' pop star's Thousand Oaks, California home to check on her.
Upon examination, a police spokesperson determined that the 'Toxic' hitmaker is not in any "any kind of harm or any kind of danger," and did not disclose whether they made direct contact with her, per Page Six.
According to the outlet, the officer did not reveal just how many calls they received from fans and explained that their reason for providing little information was because any more clarity made it a "public trust issue".
"It’s just a privacy thing for the residents in our county," they said. "It’s a public trust issue. We just don’t disclose those kinds of things [such as wellness checks]. It’s not a crime.
"We don’t really talk about any kind of mental health issues or anything like that," he continued before reiterating, "I can’t confirm or deny that deputies went to her house, but we don’t believe that Britney Spears is in any kind of harm or danger at this point."
Some of the Grammy-winning singer's worried supporters who made the calls to the police took to TikTok on January 26 to livestream the wellness check requests.
"I was calling because I am worried about the physical safety of a resident in your area," one of the callers, who identified herself as 'Christina,' said in the footage (that has since been deleted on the platform).
When the officer questioned why the fan wanted a wellness check, 'Christina' responded: "There’s been suspicious activity online and now her account has been deleted."
The officer said they would pass on the information to another colleague and didn't provide any more details.
The 'Baby One More Time' hitmaker - who days ago claimed she had changed her name to River Red - has repeatedly taken down her Instagram in recent months.
Page Six reported that before Spears' most recent social media shutdown, she posted a picture of a car and a long caption, where she wrote: "sucks to be me" and: "Giving someone I love my everything only gives me the dagger in my heart!!!"
Many of her followers suspected that the caption was in reference to her marriage since media reports claimed that her 28-year-old husband walked out on her while they were dining at a restaurant.
However, the publication shared that her fitness beau took to his Instagram Stories after to defend his wife, writing: "Don’t believe what you read online people."

Britney Spears has addressed reports that she was "out of control" after an alleged fight with her rumored boyfriend in a hotel.
According to Page Six, an ambulance was called to Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles at around 12:42AM on Thursday morning (May 2).
Sources familiar with the 42-year-old 'Toxic' songstress told TMZ that the incident stemmed from a fight she had with her rumored partner, Paul Richard Soliz.
“We received a 911 call reporting an adult female, who had been injured,” Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Brian Humphrey confirmed. “The caller did not have much information regarding the nature of the injury. We sent one ambulance to the location.”
The ambulance remained at the scene until 1:17AM but did not transport anyone to the hospital.
A report by TMZ alleges that cops were notified after some sort of "disturbance," claiming that a woman matching the 'Stronger' hitmaker's description was "harassing and threatening hotel employees and guests".

The outlet also claimed that Spears hurt her leg after getting into "a huge altercation that we're told turned physical" and was "out of control" in the hallway of her suite which led to paramedics being called.
Pictures obtained by the publication reveal Spears holding a white pillow and what seems to be a brown blanket outside the hotel. She was also reportedly surrounded by her bodyguards.
Soliz, who was her former housekeeper, was spotted standing next to her in a blue flannel shirt and black jeans.
The 'Baby One More Time' singer took to Instagram to speak out about the reports, claiming that paramedics came to the luxury hotel “illegally".
“Just to let people know … the news is fake!!! I would like respect at this time for people to understand I am getting stronger every day!!!" she wrote on her social media account.
"Truth sucks so can someone teach me how to lie? Goddesses out there, I’m reaching my higher power and furthermore, I hope you guys are too!!! I need a new toothbrush right now,” she added.
Check out Spears' statement below:
She continued: "PS … I need an expresso. PSS… Not sure why I feel the need to share this … I guess I’m just a girl and I’m on my period so I’m bi***y … s***t!!!"
Spears explained that she "twisted" her ankle last night which is why "paramedics showed up at [her] door illegally".
"They never came in my room but I felt completely harassed. I’m moving to Boston!!! Peace," she concluded.
She also later shared a video showing her ankle looking swollen after claiming to have "tried to do a leap in the living room of the Chateau".
The latest ordeal occurred shortly after the Grammy-award-winning singer settled her divorce from ex-husband Sam Asghari late Wednesday night.
The pair had called it quits in August 2023 after 14 months of marriage.
"The divorce was amicable and the prenup was not challenged," a source told PEOPLE. "Britney is continuing to flex her freedom and is moving on."

As reported by TMZ, the 41-year-old 'Toxic' songstress sparked concern amongst her fandom after she deactivated her Instagram account for the seventh time in a less than a year
Her supporters called the Ventura Co. Sheriff's Office to ask cops to be sent to Spears' Thousand Oaks, California home to check on her and upon examination, it was determined that she is not in "any kind of harm or any kind of danger," per Page Six.
On Thursday (January 26), the 'Gimme More' hitmaker shared a statement on her Twitter account, pleading for some privacy from her worried followers.
Check out Spears' tweet below:"As everyone knows the police were called to my home based on some prank phone calls," Spears wrote. "I love and adore my fans but this time things went a little too far and my privacy was invaded."
"The police never entered my home and when they came to my gate they quickly realized there was no issue and left immediately," she continued. "This felt like I was being gaslit and bullied once the incident made it to the news and being portrayed once again in a poor and unfair light by the media."
"During this time in my life, I truly hope the public and my fans who I care so much about can respect my privacy moving forward. All the love, B," the singer concluded.
One of Spears' fan accounts on the social media platform replied to her tweet, writing: "I wish you nothing but the absolute best Brit. I'm so sorry people feel like they can involve their own desire for attention [in their] own life. You deserve better."
Another follower said: "Britney deserves to finally be able to breathe and not have to worry that something negative is right around the corner. 14 years of her life were stolen let her be free to live her life happily after so many years were stolen from her."
A third chimed in and commented: "If anyone deserves peace, it’s you."
Some of the 'Baby One More Time' singer's fans grew anxious after she shared a number of bizarre posts. One of those was a video of herself naked in the shower and another addressing a "manic" episode she had at a restaurant with her husband Sam Ashgari.
According to TMZ, onlookers said she was "yelling" and "speaking in gibberish" which allegedly prompted her 28-year-old fitness guru beau to storm out of the restaurant.
Fans became increasingly concerned after she took to Instagram to reminisce about her past relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake, shared a video of a "regretful" tattoo she got in Hawaii, and then declared to her fans that she will be changing her name from Britney Spears to River Red.
However, while Asghari has not said anything publicly about his wife deactivating her Instagram, he previously confirmed that she deletes her social media pages because it "can be traumatizing" for her, so "sometimes it's good to take a break".
He also informed her fans at that time that "being overprotective can cause more stress and damage".

Britney Spears' representatives have released a statement after she was arrested.
As previously reported, the 44-year-old singer was reportedly taken into custody on a DUI charge on Wednesday night (March 4), where she spent several hours in jail before being released.
Spears was booked by the sheriff’s department at approximately 3:00AM. She remained in custody for around three hours before being released at roughly 6:00AM.
Court records show that the 'Baby One More Time' singer is now scheduled to appear in court on May 4 in relation to the case.
Following the incident, Spears’ representative issued a statement addressing the arrest and the singer’s next steps.
"This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable," they said, per PEOPLE. "Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.
"Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time," the statement continued. "Her boys are going to be spending time with her.
"Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being," they added.
This isn’t the first time Spears has faced legal issues related to driving. Back in 2007, she allegedly hit a parked car in Los Angeles, leading to four misdemeanor charges and a jail sentence.
However, the charges were later dropped, and Spears ultimately avoided jail time after a jury acquitted her of driving without a California license.
That period of the singer’s life was also marked by significant personal challenges. During the same time, she lost custody of her two sons with her ex-husband Kevin Federline - Sean Preston Federline, now 20, and Jayden James Federline, now 19.
The singer was estranged from her sons for some time, though she reportedly reunited with Jayden around Christmas in 2024.
The 'Gimme More' musician's personal struggles have often been tied to the conservatorship that controlled much of her life for more than a decade.
The legal arrangement, which placed her father, Jamie Spears, in control of her finances, career, and many personal decisions, lasted nearly 14 years.
The conservatorship finally came to an end in November 2021 after 13 years, following intense public scrutiny and the global #FreeBritney movement led by fans.
In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears opened up about how the arrangement affected her life. She wrote that it “stripped me of my womanhood [and] made me into a child," per The Independent.

Britney Spears has spoken out after NBA star Victor Wembanyama claimed that she grabbed him from behind before his security guard allegedly slapped her in the face.
News broke out on Thursday (June 6) that the 41-year-old singer filed a police report after she was allegedly slapped while out for dinner at Catch restaurant in Las Vegas with her husband Sam Asghari on Wednesday.
The 'Toxic' songstress said she was attempting to approach NBA star Wembanyama to request a photo together and tapped him on the shoulder.
But the situation apparently took an unexpected turn after the Director of Team Security for the San Antonio Spurs - the team that had drafted the 19-year-old just the previous month - reacted immediately.
Spears was at dinner with Asghari when the incident allegedly happened. Credit: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / GettyThe 'Baby One More Time' hitmaker accuses the individual named Damian Smith of "slapping" her, causing her to fall to the ground, and in the process, knocking her glasses off.
After the incident, she went back to her table and Smith is said to have approached her to apologize and mentioned the pressures of fan attention, saying: "You understand how it is when you're being swarmed by fans."
The outlet stated that Spears accepted his apology, but that wasn't the end of it as her team made a decision to escalate the matter by lodging a formal complaint with the Metropolitan Police Department, accusing the security guard of battery.
The San Antonio Spurs player addressed the alleged attack at a press conference. He appeared to dismiss the pop icon's version of events, arguing that she tried to grab him from behind which compelled his security into action.
"I don't know with how much force, though. But security pushed her away. I didn't stop to look so I could walk in and enjoy the nice dinner," he continued.
The Spurs' rookie then added that he was unaware who the woman who approached him was until hours later, saying: "At first I was like, 'No, you're joking,' But, yeah, it turns out it was Britney Spears."
Upon seeing his comments, Spears decided to share her story in detail. The 'Stronger' singer posted a statement on her Twitter and Instagram, and began by saying that "traumatic experiences are not new to me and I have had my fair share of them. I was not prepared for what happened to me last night".
She explained that she "recognized" Wembanyama in her hotel lobby as she was heading to dinner and later "saw him again" at a different hotel so she wanted to "approach him and congratulate him on his success".
"It was really loud so I tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention," she continued, noting that she was "aware" of the NBA player's statement where he mentions that she "grabbed him from behind" and said: "I simply tapped him on the shoulder."
"His security then backhanded me in the face without looking back, in front of a crowd. Nearly knocking me down and causing my glasses off my face," she went on.
The Grammy-winning songstress added that she's used to being swarmed by fans all the time and that during the same night of the incident she had been "swarmed by a group of at least 20 fans" but her security team "didn't hit any of them".
She then described the situation as "super embarrassing" but said it was "important to share… and to urge people in the public eye to set an example and treat all people with respect".
"Physical violence is happening too much in this world. Often behind closed doors. I stand with all the victims and my heart goes out to all of you!!! I have yet to get a public apology from the player, his security, or their organization. I hope they will," she penned.
Spears concluded her statement by expressing gratitude to fans for the "tremendous amount of love and support," as well as thanking the Las Vegas Police Department.
