John Stamos tried to get Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen fired from Full House when they were 11 months old and he's finally explained why.
It’s hard to imagine Full House without the adorable face of Michelle Tanner — but according to Uncle Jesse himself, that almost became a reality.
In both his memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, and an appearance on the Good Guys podcast, Stamos opened up about the chaos of day one filming with the then-11-month-old twins.
“So, we're carrying the baby downstairs and we take her in the kitchen and we hose her down,” he told hosts Josh Peck and Ben Soffer. “And she was screaming. Both of them. They wanted to be anywhere else but there, and so did I.
“They were 11 months old, and God bless them. They kept switching: ‘This one’s not gonna cry.’ I couldn't deal with it.”
In the memoir, he recalls being “upstaged” at the table read by co-star Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie Tanner) and admits he was already having second thoughts about signing onto a family show.
“I’m dying to pull the rip cord on this family-friendly hell, but I’ll fulfill my contractual obligation to shoot the pilot. Keep it professional.”
Then came the diaper-changing scene — and the meltdown, per Today.
“I’m trying to get through a scene, and the cutesy twins are crying their heads off. They’d rather be anywhere in the world other than that set, and I’m right there with them.
“I screamed at [the producers], ‘I can't work like this.’ And so they got rid of them.”
Or as he told Full House creator Jeff Franklin: “It’s either me or them. They’re not going to work out. They’ll ruin this show and my career.”
But the replacements didn’t go as planned.
“It was only a few days, and I said, ‘Bring the Olsens back! These kids are terrible,” Stamos told the podcast.
In his book, he writes that the new twins were “quiet, calm, and homely as hell.” He now suspects Franklin planned the switch to make him regret his decision:
“I can’t help but wonder if Jeff deliberately chose the homely twins fully aware that I wouldn’t like them and would beg to get Mary-Kate and Ashley back.”
He adds that the Olsens were likely waiting backstage the whole time.
Despite the rocky start, Stamos says their bond blossomed.
“I adore them, and they adore me,” he writes.
He even took the girls to Disneyland off set. Writers began developing more scenes for Uncle Jesse and Michelle because of their chemistry.
Stamos says he remained close with Mary-Kate and Ashley even after Full House ended in 1995.
They came to see him in Broadway’s Cabaret: “It’s pretty weird having adult Michelles sitting there in stereo watching me play someone so different from their beloved Uncle Jesse, but they get it. We share a mutual pride for how far we’ve all come.”
They even attended his wedding to Rebecca Romijn, along with other Full House castmates.

John Stamos has recently reminisced on the time he called for twin actresses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to be fired from the hit sitcom Full House.
The 59-year-old actor - who is arguably every mother's celebrity crush - solidified his career in the sitcom from 1987 to 1995, in which he played Jesse Katsopolis.
Jesse was the uncle of Mary-Kate and Ashley's character Michelle - who was portrayed by both girls.
Though, it wasn't always happy families and smooth sailing - as Stamos recalled on a recent episode of Josh Peck and Ben Soffer's Good Guys podcast that he very nearly got the twins fired.
"Did you try to get the Olsen twins fired?" Peck asked the actor, to which Stamos said in no uncertain terms, "I did. I didn't try."
During the episode, Stamos explained that he and his castmate Dave Coulier were tasked with changing the then-11-month-old Olsen twins' nappies as part of a scene. "So, we're carrying the baby downstairs and we take her in the kitchen and we hose her down. And she was screaming. Both of them. They wanted to be anywhere else but there, and so did I," he told Peck and Soffer.
Slowly, Stamos became increasingly frustrated with the twins' lack of cooperation, declaring that he simply could not work with the babies any longer. "They were 11 months old, and God bless them. They kept switching: 'This one's not gonna cry.' I couldn't deal with it. And I said, 'This is not gonna work.' I screamed at [the producers], 'I can't work like this.' And so they got rid of them," Stamos revealed.
Given the stress of the situation, the producers decided it would be best that the Olsens be replaced by other babies. Though, this clearly didn't seem to work as, days later, it became apparent to the crew that the new babies weren't an ideal fit. As such, Stamos asked for Mary-Kate and Ashley to return as baby Michelle.
"It was only a few days, and I said, 'Bring the Olsens back! These kids are terrible,'" Stamos explained. When the actor was asked whether the twins knew about their temporary "firing", Stamos quipped: "They do now."
The Olsen twins appeared in numerous teen movies during the early 00s, however, have since stepped away from acting and embarked on careers as fashion designers.
As for Stamos, he eventually reprised his role as Jesse on the sitcom's revival, Fuller House. He was joined by the series' original cast members - including Coulier, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, Andrea Barber, Scott Weinger, and the late Bob Saget. Lori Loughlin also appeared on the revival for the first four seasons.
The Olsens had been asked to join the reboot, something Stamos told radio DJ Howard Stern in 2016. "I did call, I talked to Mary-Kate and I explained kind of what the show was going to be, and told them I would love them to be on there and they decided not to, which I respect," he recalled, via People.

John Stamos' three-year-old son Billy is now a fan of the hit 80s/90s sitcom Full House, with Stamos crediting his late co-star and longtime friend Bob Saget with the youngster's newfound obsession.
On Tuesday, February 1, the 58-year-old actor took to Instagram to post a sweet video of the toddler watching one of the early episodes of the ABC series, which aired between 1987 and 1995.
In the adorable clip, little Billy is heard saying "this is funny" as he watches the show which sees his father portray Uncle Jesse and Saget play doting dad-of-three, Danny Tanner.
In the caption, he explained that his son "was never interested in Full House, and I perfectly fine with that."
"Bob died, now he's obsessed," Stamos added. "I blame Bob."
Since it was posted yesterday, the post has managed to rack up 1.3 million views, nearly 3,000 comments, and more than 350,000 likes.
Needless to say, a number of fans of the show took to the comments to gush over the video, with one person sharing: "Kids got good taste!"
Another chimed in: "It’s a kid favorite! My kids love it too (and I did when I was younger.) it’s something we can all watch and enjoy."
A third said: "It’s so funny! 90s kid here rewatching and I just love the dynamic among the cast, the love is palpable."
Saget was found dead in his hotel room at Florida's Ritz-Carlton only a couple of hours after his stand-up show.
At the time of his death, the funnyman's family issued a public statement to confirm the devastating news.
"We are devastated to confirm that our beloved Bob passed away today," they told Fox News. "He was everything to us and we want you to know how much he loved his fans, performing live and bringing people from all walks of life together with laughter."
"Though we ask for privacy at this time, we invite you to join us in remembering the love and laughter that Bob brought to the world," the statement added.

If you're a fan of John Stamos, you'll know that the Full House actor has wanted children for a long time now.
When he joked that his "ovaries were rattling" back in 2015, we were all rooting for him to seal the deal and show us some beautiful Stamos offspring. Then, finally in 2018, the Born to Ride actor's dream became a reality. In April, John and his 32-year-old wife Caitlin McHugh welcomed their newborn son Billy Stamos into the world - and what a beauty he was.

However, when it comes to celebrity babies, there is one inevitable thing that always follows: parent shaming. Unfortunately, John was the victim of this trend only recently when he uploaded a picture of himself holding his son in Times Square, New York. Captioning the image "The Stamos boys take Manhattan", the My Big Fat Greek Wedding star got nearly 210,000 likes on his post, but also received dozens of comments from people who insisted he wasn't holding his baby correctly.
"He is absolutely adorable, but he is way too young/little to be forward-facing in a baby carrier," one follower wrote. "You need one where baby’s tummy is against your tummy. My almost 10-month-old is still in a baby carrier where his tummy against my tummy."
Another commented saying "He's too young to comfortably and safely be worn forward facing! His little hips are not ready!" while a fellow Instagram user claimed "The baby must go head to chest with you. That’s the wrong way carrying him because his back suffers."

Of course, the new dad was not without his supporters. Fans jumped in to defend him Instagram user @colombia45 wrote directly to one person who was criticising him, saying "@septembermommy16 shup up..lol try looking at other countries and see how people carry their children. Even in baskets. Lol [sic]", while angelcat39 commented saying "Adorable...and his carrier is perfectly fine and he is just fine facing forward. Ignore the sanctimommies. [sic]"
Others pointed out that, rather than slamming the actor for his decisions in fatherhood, people should instead celebrate that he was finally a baby daddy. "John how long have you waited to say that. His so cute god bless? [sic]" wrote Instagram user @featherstonealesia.

It's certainly true that the 54-year-old has waited years to have kids and has spoken out before about struggling to find the perfect woman to have them with. "I hope [to have kids]," the musician said back in 2017 about his hopes to start a family. "That's always been my plan. It's just taken me a lot longer than I anticipated. It would be a tragedy if I didn't have children and I finally found the right woman -- the perfect woman."
We're so glad that the actor has finally found the ideal partner to share his life with, we wish them all the best with baby Billy!

John Stamos isn't just a famous television actor and shameless Jonas Brothers stan - he's also a musician who has performed with The Beach Boys since 1985. (For those of you not in a nursing home, the Beach Boys were the Jonas Brothers of the 1960's.) In 1992, Stamos sang lead vocals for a cover of the Beach Boys' 1970 hit, Forever, which was featured twice on the hit sitcom Full House.
For many people, Stamos will always be 'Uncle Jesse,' Danny Tanner's cool, irresponsible brother-in-law, who idolized Elvis Presley. (For those of you not in a nursing home, Elvis Presley was the Justin Bieber of the 1950's). Uncle Jesse played in a struggling band called The Rippers, and Forever became their flagship song. Years after the series ended, Stamos reprised the character, singing Forever on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and the Netflix revival Fuller House.

When you grow older, it gets harder to do a lot of things, like lose weight, sleep all night without peeing, and get away with bribing USC officials with half a million dollars to get your lackluster daughters into college as star rowing athletes despite not being part of a rowing team. And it's also more difficult to perform concerts.
While playing with The Beach Boys in Dallas, Texas, Stamos suffered an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. Just after stepping on stage, he ripped his pants. (I guess that's why they call them Jesse and the Rippers! Cue Full House laugh track.) Reportedly the trousers were part of a $5,080 three-piece suit, but the 55-year-old actor took it in stride.

"First time [fashion designer] @TOMFORD has ever let me down," Stamos tweeted. "Ripped pants five minutes in to @TheBeachBoys show in Dallas. I think that Jonas kid is behind this! (or my butt is getting bigger --) #Rippers #Beachbums."
Recently Stomas and the "Jonas kid" took part in a hilarious, Inception-style prank war. Stamos was spotted wearing a Jonas Brothers shirt at an event, then Nick Jonas posted a photo on Instagram wearing a shirt with an image of Stamos wearing a Jonas Brothers shirt, then Stamos posted a photo sleeping on a pillow with an image of Jonas wearing a shirt with an image of Stamos wearing a Jonas Brothers shirt - you get the idea.
The battle finally ended with Stamos posted a photo where he appeared to getting a giant tattoo of Nick Jonas' face. In the comments, the 24-year-old singer wrote, "Okay, okay…," which seemed like he was conceding defeat.
But maybe that reaction was just a feint, and Jonas secretly replaced Stamos' trousers with an exact replica, but a few sizes too small, dooming him to suffer an embarrassing moment on stage. If so, then well-played, Nick Jonas! I guess no one ever taught you to...have mercy. (Cue Full House laugh track.)

The Full House star took to Instagram to post a picture of himself enjoying a rooftop shower in New York City, wearing only a pair of Calvin Klein underwear.

One follower penned: "Happy birthday!!! Where is your belly button though?!?"
Another simply asked: "Where's your belly button?"
A third added: "Your mafic belly button has disappeared! Do you keep it in a jar? Happy birthday, Bada**!"

Actress Rita Wilson commented, “I love this. A ny rooftop birthday shower!” while singer Richard Marx playfully pointed out the obvious, saying, “Look at you up there making folks thirsty! Happy birthday bro!”

Even Stamos' long-time friend and co-star, Dave Coulier, got in on the fun, sharing a series of photos from their years together, including a shirtless one of the two. “Happy birthday @johnstamos we’ve had Fun, Fun, Fun and so many laughs for so many years,” Coulier wrote. “I love you, my brother.”
Along with the playful photo, Stamos reflected on the past year in a heartfelt message. “A rooftop birthday shower in NYC to start the day, and the love of family and friends to carry me through,” he wrote. “At 62, I’ve learned the best things in life can’t be washed away … laughter, love, and gratitude. Thank you for every wish and every year. I don’t take a single drop for granted.”
Stamos also credited his wife, Caitlin McHugh, for keeping him youthful. The couple, who have been married for seven years, share a son, Billy, who is seven years old. In a past interview with Us Weekly, Stamos revealed that staying active and taking care of himself has helped him maintain his youthful appearance. "I work out three or four times a week," he said. "Good sleep helps, as does having a young son."
Reflecting on his journey, Stamos shared, "I stopped drinking 10 years ago. That’s why I’m alive. I never would have met my wife if I was still drinking. Getting married and having a child, that’s kept me young and kept me alive. I think that’s helped with my longevity."
Stamos' birthday post has certainly left an impression, with fans and friends alike celebrating the star’s timeless charm and vitality.
