What cops said after they saw Ohio 'House of Horrors' where 16 children were found
First responders on the scene at the Ohio ‘House of Horrors’ where 16 children were discovered were left in absolute shock and disgust at the conditions they found.
It’s a case that has horrified the entire nation, way beyond the small corner of Ohio that it came from.
Gary and Elizabeth Siders allegedly had 16 children living in one filthy room
Since the grim discovery was made, everyone from law enforcement and experts to family members and neighbors has been speaking out about the horrific scenes discovered within the walls of the house in Hamden, Ohio.
33-year-old Elizabeth Siders and her husband Gary have been arrested alongside Gary’s father of the same name and his mother Christine.
The elder Gary has since made the case that he is not fit to stand trial, and further investigations into all the arrested are ongoing.
Among the kids discovered was an 18-year-old with serious developmental disabilities and other kids who were severely ill and needed hospital treatment.
According to investigators, the eldest child was unable to write her own name and some were unable to speak.
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson described the conditions as ‘beyond comprehension’, but there was one other word that first responders used upon finding the house.
Wilson added: "I think if they would have waited another 24 hours, that there was a very high probability that we'd be dealing with a death or multiple deaths of these children.”
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said the house was ‘disgusting’ and added: "Most of our livestock was kept in better conditions than the children.”
The case has drawn huge attention because of its grim nature
The case has been described as an ‘intra-family situation’ with several generations of the family living in squalor in the small property.
It is not being treated as a case of human trafficking, however.
The four suspects have been charged with 16 counts of child endangerment, which is a second-degree felony.
All have pleaded not guilty and are being held under bond.
Within the charges are allegations that all of the accused abused the children, causing ‘serious physical harm’.
Elizabeth Siders, the mother of all of the children, has asked to be released from custody and her lawyer has made several claims about her involvement.
According to a court filing, she has asked to be reunited with her children.
Attorney Thomas Stolly said: "Through conversations with Counsel, the Defendant maintains that her principal desire [is] to reunite with her children.
"She understands that reunification of any sort is an impossibility if she does not appear before this Court.”
He added: "She did not ask when she was getting out of jail. She did not ask what a timeline was for her to get out of jail. She started asking about the kids.”
According to reports, Elizabeth was 15 when she married Gary, three years her senior, and gave birth two months later.
She has reportedly given birth to 21 children, although several have died, including reportedly conjoined twins.
Her brother Jeremy Russell has hit out online, claiming she was ‘indoctrinated’ as a teenager.
The case continues.
