Amber Heard has explained how she believes the infamous "fecal matter" incident came about as she spoke on the witness stand for a third time during her ongoing defamation trial against Johnny Depp.

Depp, 58, testified last month that he was "shown a picture" of what he described as "human fecal matter", which was left on his side of the bed that he shared with Heard, 36, sometime in 2016 - the year that the pair ended their relationship.

He said: "My initial response to [the fecal matter] was, I mean... I laughed. It was so outside. It was so bizarre and so grotesque that I could only laugh."

The Pirates of the Caribbean star believes it was left there by Heard or a friend of hers as a mean-spirited practical joke following an argument they'd had.

Starling Jenkins II, a longtime security guard and chauffeur to Depp, had told the jury on April 28 that while driving her to Coachella, the Aquaman star had said something about leaving a "surprise" on her then-husband's bed.

Returning to the stand on Monday following a 10-day break in proceedings, Heard refuted the allegation that she was responsible for the defecation.

Heard explains her side of the "fecal matter" incident:

Per People, she told the court: "First of all, I don't think that's funny. I don't know what grown woman does. I was not also in a pranking mood; my life was falling apart. I was at a crossroads in my life. I was really serious.

"And I had just been attacked on my 30th birthday by my violent husband with whom I was desperately in love and knew I needed to leave. It was not really a jovial time, and I don't think that's funny. Period. That's disgusting."

According to Heard, it was most likely Depp's dog, Boo, who was responsible for the feces. She claimed that since accidentally eating her ex-husband's weed as a puppy, the teacup Yorkie, has had "bowel control issues".

The actress said Boo was on the bed while she was packing for Coachella, so a fecal accident could have occurred at that time.

Depp is suing Heard for defamation in response to a December 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post, which was titled: I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture's wrath. That has to change.

While Heard did not name her former husband in the piece, his lawyers are arguing that as a result of her previous claims of physical abuse at the hands of their client, he would naturally be associated with the article.
